Chapter 7 - The Master Key

The morning sun rose over Lake Washington, washing away the fog and rain, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and gold.
By noon, the estate had been completely restored by Ethan’s specialized cleanup crews. The shattered glass was gone, the damaged walls repaired, and the remaining Moretti network in Chicago was being systematically dismantled by federal authorities using the encrypted data found on David Miller’s flash drive.
The flash drive hadn't contained cryptocurrency.
It had contained a master ledger of political corruption, bribery records, and money-laundering channels used by three major syndicates across the United States.
By handing the drive over to the Department of Justice through an anonymous legal firm, Ethan had secured absolute, permanent immunity for Sophie and Amy, while obliterating every enemy family that threatened his border.
In the sunlit library of the Mercer Island mansion, Ethan sat at a massive mahogany desk.
Sophie walked inside, dressed in a soft cream cashmere sweater and blue jeans. Her face was pale, but the dark bruises were fading, replaced by a soft, healthy radiance.
She set a hot mug of coffee down on his desk.
"Amy is sleeping downstairs," Sophie said softly, sitting in the armchair across from him. "Marcus bought her a motorized mini-car. She’s been driving it around the indoor basketball court for three hours."
Ethan smiled—a real, genuine smile that transformed his harsh, sharp features into something breathtakingly handsome.
"Marcus is spoiling her," Ethan murmured.
"She deserves to be spoiled," Sophie said, her eyes glistening. She looked down at her hands, taking a deep breath. "Mr. Cole... the news says the Moretti syndicate is gone. The police said I'm completely safe now."
Ethan’s smile slowly faded. He leaned back in his leather chair, looking at her intently. "Yes. You are completely safe. You have a clean record, a secure bank account funded by the government informant reward program, and complete freedom."
Sophie swallowed hard, a sudden, cold panic clutching at her heart. "Freedom?"
"You don't have to live in fear anymore, Sophie," Ethan explained softly, his voice tinged with a quiet, hidden sadness. "I have purchased a luxury penthouse for you in Vancouver, or a house in California... wherever you want to go. You will never have to scrub a floor again. You can give Amy the life she deserves."
Sophie stood up abruptly, her wooden chair scraping against the hardwood floor.
"You're sending us away?" she asked, her voice cracking with emotion.
Ethan looked up, startled by her sudden reaction. "Sophie, I am a mafia boss. My world is filled with blood, violence, and shadows. You are a good, innocent woman. You deserve a peaceful life far away from men like me."
Sophie walked around the desk, stopping right beside his chair.
She reached down, grabbing his large, calloused hand, pressing it firmly against her warm cheek.
"Don't you dare decide what I deserve, Ethan Cole," Sophie said, tears spilling over her eyelashes, her voice ringed with incredible strength. "Two days ago, I was a broken woman scrubbing floors, waiting to die in an alley. You saved my life. You bled for my daughter. You gave my child a home, safety, and a father figure she looks up to like a hero."
Ethan froze, his heart pounding wildly against his ribs. "Sophie..."
"I don't want a penthouse in Vancouver," Sophie sobbed softly, leaning down until her lips were inches from his. "I don't want a quiet life without you. I want to stay right here. In your fortress. With you."
Ethan didn't wait another second.

He stood up, pulling her into his arms, his mouth capturing hers in a deep, desperate, possessive kiss that wiped away years of loneliness, blood, and pain.
Sophie wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her fingers in his dark hair, giving herself entirely to the man who had claimed her soul.
