Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Hallway

By the third morning, the heavy medication had cleared from Sophie’s system, allowing her to sit up in bed without screaming from the agony in her ribs.

The room she was in looked like a five-star hotel suite. Sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating fresh floral arrangements, a tray of hot soup and artisan bread, and a massive television playing cartoons for Amy.

Sophie looked down at her wrists. The industrial bleach stains were gone, replaced by soft silk pajamas.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Ethan walked in.

He was dressed in a pristine white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, showing dark tattoos of ancient Celtic armor wrapping around his muscle. He carried a silver tray with fresh tea and a small leather box.

"How are your ribs today?" Ethan asked, setting the tray down on her bedside table.

Sophie instinctively pulled the duvet closer to her chest, her eyes wide with lingering fear and deep confusion. "Mr. Cole... why are you doing this? I... I know who you are. Everyone in Seattle knows who you are. You're a dangerous man."

Ethan pulled a leather chair up to the side of her bed and sat down, leaning his elbows on his knees.

"I am a dangerous man to my enemies, Sophie," Ethan said smoothly. "To you and your daughter, I am the only thing standing between you and a grave."

Sophie lowered her eyes, a tear escaping her eyelashes and tracing a path down her bruised cheek. "It’s David's fault... isn't it? The Morettis... they think I have something that belongs to them."

"Do you?" Ethan asked directly, his dark gaze piercing right into her soul.

Sophie shook her head desperately. "I swear to God, Mr. Cole! I don't know anything about money or hard drives! David died four years ago! All he left me was a storage locker filled with old baby clothes, his father’s watch, and a box of old tax returns! I worked sixteen hours a day scrubbing floors just to keep Amy in school!"

Ethan watched her face closely. As a man who spent his life surrounded by liars, politicians, and criminals, he could spot deception in a heartbeat.

Sophie Miller was telling the absolute truth. She was completely innocent—a civilian caught in the gears of a ruthless mob war.

Ethan reached out, opening the small leather box he had brought with him. Inside lay a sleek, custom encrypted tracking bracelet made of rose gold.

"This contains a GPS locator and a silent distress beacon," Ethan explained gently, lifting the bracelet. "I want you to wear it. Amy has a smaller version hidden in her shoes."

Sophie looked at the glittering jewelry, then looked up into Ethan’s face. "Why are you protecting us? We're nobody to you. I'm just a woman who cleans your office."

Ethan reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently lifting her chin so her eyes met his.

"You're not nobody, Sophie," Ethan said softly. "The moment your six-year-old child stepped into my private office and offered me half her toast, your family became my personal responsibility. In my world, once I claim something, nobody touches it. Ever."

A strange, electric warmth flushed through Sophie’s chest, sending her heart pounding against her cracked ribs. Looking into Ethan’s fierce, protective eyes, she realized something terrifying:

She wasn't afraid of the ruthless mafia boss standing before her.

She was afraid of how safe she felt in his arms.
