Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The rain poured heavily outside the industrial office park where Richard’s printing company was located. Inside the dimly lit executive conference room, the air was thick with tension.
At 7:00 PM, the door opened. Dominic walked in, followed by Victoria and Arthur Pendelton. Dominic wore an smug, triumphant smile, while Victoria surveyed the modest office with open disdain, pulling her cashmere coat tightly around her shoulders.
Clara sat alone at the long table, dressed in a simple dark sweater. She looked weary, her eyes lowered, mimicking the posture of a woman pushed to her absolute limit.
"Well, well," Dominic taunted, pulling out a leather chair and sliding into it across from her. "Look who finally came to her senses. I told you, Clara. I told you on night one: without me, you’re nobody. Look at you now—begging for mercy to save your father's little printing shop."
Victoria remained standing, crossing her arms. "Let’s get this over with quickly, Arthur. The air in this place smells like cheap ink and desperation."
Pendelton laid out a heavy stack of legal documents on the table. "These are the full mutual release forms, Clara. You will sign an affidavit stating that the incident at L’Etoile was an accidental stumble, that all financial transfers to Vanguard Holdings were authorized pre-marital gifts, and that you waive all rights to future claims. In return, the bank will restore your father’s line of credit by tomorrow morning, and Dominic will decline to press larceny charges."
Clara looked up slowly, her hands trembling slightly on the table—a gesture Dominic interpreted as fear, but which was actually adrenaline pumping through her veins.
"And my father's business?" Clara asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "You personally orchestrated the bank freezing his accounts, didn't you, Victoria?"
Victoria scoffed, stepping forward with a cold, mocking laugh. "Of course I did, my dear. Did you honestly believe a woman of my standing would let a middle-class girl ruin my family’s reputation over a few hundred thousand dollars? A quick phone call to my cousin at First City Commerce was all it took. One word from me, and your father’s life work vanishes."
Dominic chuckled, leaning over the table, bringing his face close to Clara’s just as he had done on the night he humiliated her.
"You thought you were so clever with your little security videos and forensic reports," Dominic sneered, his voice dripping with venom. "You’re nothing, Clara. You’ve always been nothing. I owned you for six years, and I still own you. Now sign the papers, or your father goes bankrupt before sunrise."
Clara stared at Dominic’s face—the face that had haunted her dreams for years, the face of the man who had kicked her into her dinner and laughed while she bled inside.
Slowly, the fearful expression melted from Clara’s face. She straightened her spine, her shoulders relaxing, and a calm, radiant smile spread across her lips.
Dominic’s smirk faltered. "What are you smiling at?"
Clara reached up to her lapel and unpinned a small silver brooch—the button-sized recording device Julian had given her. She laid it gently on the center of the table.
"I’m smiling because you just confessed to federal bank fraud, witness tampering, and extortion on a high-definition federal audio wiretap," Clara said smoothly.
Pendelton’s face turned ghastly white. "What?!"
Before Dominic could react, the heavy double doors of the conference room swung open.
Federal agents dressed in dark blue jackets marked FBI and State Financial Crimes Bureau poured into the room, led by Julian Vance and Marcus Vance.
"Dominic Sterling! Victoria Sterling!" the lead federal agent announced loudly, pulling out pairs of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, and witness tampering!"
Victoria gasped, taking a step back, her hands flying to her throat. "This is a mistake! Do you know who I am?!"
"We know exactly who you are, Victoria," Marcus Vance said, stepping into the room with a cold smile. "And thanks to your little speech just now, the State Attorney General has all the evidence needed to deny bail."
Dominic lunged across the table toward Clara in a blind, desperate rage. "You ruined me! You traitorous bitch!"
Two federal agents instantly tackled Dominic to the ground, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs securely around his wrists. He smashed his cheek against the floor, struggling furiously, looking up at Clara with wild, terrified eyes.
Clara stood up slowly from her chair. She walked around the table, standing right over Dominic as he lay pinned to the floor in hand restraints.

She leaned down, her voice calm, clear, and resonant in the quiet room.
"Without you, Dominic..." Clara whispered, echoing his favorite phrase one last time, "...I am finally free."
