Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The news of the bank freezing her father’s business credit lines sent a chill through Clara’s home. Her father sat at the kitchen table late into the night, staring at spreadsheets, trying to figure out how to pay his twenty employees without the bank's revolving loan.
"It’s my fault," Clara whispered, sitting beside him in the quiet house. "She’s doing this to punish me. She wants me to crawl back on my knees and dismiss the lawsuit in exchange for saving your business."
Her father stopped typing, looked up, and took Clara’s hands in his. His eyes were tired, but his gaze was filled with unwavering resolve.
"Listen to me, Clara," Richard said firmly. "I built this business from scratch in a garage thirty years ago. If I lose it tomorrow, I will build it again. But I will never let you sell your dignity or your freedom to protect my bank account. Do you hear me? We do not surrender to bullies."
Tears pricked Clara’s eyes, but she nodded, pulling her father into a tight embrace.
The next morning, Clara met with Marcus Vance and Julian at Vance’s legal office. The atmosphere in the room was electric with calculated intensity.
"They think they’ve backed us into a corner," Marcus Vance said, pacing in front of a whiteboard filled with flowcharts. "Victoria's cousin at First City Commerce bank overstepped significantly by pulling those credit lines without proper notice. That constitutes illegal tortious interference with business relations."
"We can file an injunction against the bank," Julian added, "but that will take weeks in civil court. Richard needs payroll solved by Friday. However, Victoria's illegal maneuver gave us the exact weapon we needed to finish this."
Clara looked at Julian. "What weapon?"
"To trigger a federal investigation into Vanguard Holdings, the State Financial Crimes Bureau needed proof of active racketeering and coercion," Julian explained. "By using financial pressure on your father's bank to force a settlement in a private legal matter, Victoria just committed federal witness tampering and bank fraud."
"So what’s our move?" Clara asked.
"We play along," Marcus Vance declared, a sharp smirk spreading across his face. "We let them think their pressure tactic worked. We contact Pendelton and tell him that you are willing to discuss a settlement meeting at your father’s office tomorrow evening."
"A settlement meeting?" Clara questioned, frowning slightly.
"A trap," Vance corrected smoothly. "We tell them you are willing to drop all charges and sign a non-disclosure agreement in exchange for restoring your father’s business credit lines and a small payout. Victoria and Dominic’s arrogance will draw them straight into the room. They will want to gloat. They will want to watch you surrender."
Julian reached into his briefcase and pulled out a small, sleek black device no larger than a button.
"And while they are gloating and admitting to manipulating the bank to crush your family," Julian said, placing the device on the desk, "this high-definition audio and video transmitter will record every single word directly to a secure federal server."

Clara looked at the tiny device, feeling the gravity of the moment settle over her. This was the final stretch. If this failed, her father’s business would collapse, and Dominic’s legal team would tear her apart. If it succeeded, Dominic and Victoria’s reign of terror would end permanently.
"Set up the meeting," Clara said quietly. "I’ll give them the performance they’re waiting for."
