Chapter 4 - The Gala Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel glistened with crystal chandeliers, shimmering silk dresses, and the clinking of champagne flutes. Hundreds of the city’s wealthiest elite gathered for the Metropolitan Children's Foundation Gala. At the center table sat Victoria Sterling, glowing with regal pride, flanked by Dominic and a circle of adoring socialites.

Dominic looked relaxed, sipping scotch and conversing with local real estate moguls, convinced that their public smear campaign had successfully crushed Clara into submission.

Across the ballroom, near the entrance doors, Clara stepped into the warm light.

She wore a striking, floor-length emerald green gown—a dress that radiated elegance, confidence, and quiet authority. Her hair was styled immaculately, her posture erect, her chin held high. Beside her stood Arthur Miller, a licensed process server dressed in a sharp tuxedo, holding a leather briefcase containing the official legal documents.

As Clara walked into the main room, whispering began to ripple through the crowd near the doorway.

"Is that... Clara Sterling?" "The woman from the tabloid articles?" "Look at her... she doesn't look unhinged at all."

Dominic turned toward the murmuring crowd, his glass hovering near his lips. When his eyes caught Clara, his expression froze. The glass nearly slipped from his hand. Beside him, Victoria’s polite smile shattered, replaced by a mask of icy fury.

Ignoring the stares and hushed whispers, Clara walked smoothly across the polished marble floor directly toward the head table. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her stride was unyielding.

Dominic stood up abruptly, stepping forward to intercept her, his voice low and furious. "What the hell are you doing here, Clara? You aren't invited to this level of society anymore. Get out before I have security throw you onto the pavement."

Clara stopped three feet away from him. She didn't flinch, didn't shrink back, and didn't raise her voice.

"I’m not here for your party, Dominic," Clara said calmly, her voice carrying clearly to the surrounding tables. "I’m here to deliver something you dropped."

Arthur Miller stepped forward smoothly, pulling two thick white envelopes from his briefcase. In front of press photographers, news reporters, and the entire board of the foundation, Arthur handed the first envelope directly to Dominic and the second directly to Victoria.

"Dominic Sterling and Victoria Sterling," Arthur announced loudly and clearly. "You are hereby officially served with a summons and complaint for dissolution of marriage, physical battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and civil fraud amounting to $450,000."

Gasps erupted across the ballroom. Flashbulbs began flashing rapidly as photojournalists swiveled their cameras toward the head table.

"This is insane!" Victoria hissed, standing up and sweeping the legal papers off her table onto the floor. "This is a harassment scheme! Security! Remove these people immediately!"

"You can throw the paper on the floor, Victoria," Clara said, looking her mother-in-law dead in the eye with a calm, pitying gaze. "But you can't throw away the evidence. The forensic accounting report is attached. So is the complete, unedited security footage from L’Etoile."

"You little snake!" Dominic roared, taking a step toward Clara, his fists clenching.

Before he could reach her, two venue security officers—who had already been briefed by Vance regarding the restraining order petition—stepped between Dominic and Clara, barring his path.

Clara took a step backward, looking at the shocked faces of the city’s elite surrounding them.

"Enjoy your gala, Victoria," Clara said softly. "I hear the Humanitarian of the Year award requires a clean criminal record."

Turning on her heel, Clara walked out of the ballroom. As she crossed the threshold into the cool evening air outside, she felt the heavy weight that had rested on her chest for six years lift completely. She was no longer the victim hiding under a table; she was the storm coming for their empire.
