Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Accomplice

With Daniel held in federal custody without bail pending trial, the focus of our legal team turned to the snake who had fed his ego from the shadows: Vanessa Miller.
Vanessa thought she could slip away quietly. The day after Daniel’s arrest, she cleared out her desk at the office, grabbed her designer handbags, and booked a one-way ticket to Miami under her mother's maiden name.
She was sitting in the First Class lounge at JFK Airport, sipping a mimosa and checking her reflection in her compact mirror, believing she had managed to escape the wreckage unscathed.
"Miss Miller?" a sharp female voice called out.
Vanessa looked up, expecting an airline attendant.
Instead, she was greeted by two female investigators from the New York Attorney General’s office, accompanied by Arthur Pendelton and a squad of airport police.
Vanessa’s glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the plush carpet, spilling orange juice across her white designer sneakers.
"What is this?" she demanded, trying to put on her signature fragile air. "I'm a victim here! I was injured in the earthquake! I was just Daniel’s secretary!"
Arthur Pendelton pulled a glossy blue folder from his briefcase and dropped it onto the glass coffee table in front of her.
"You weren't just his secretary, Miss Miller," Arthur said calmly. "You were his corporate bagman."
Vanessa blinked rapidly. "I don't know what you're talking about!"
"Three weeks ago," Arthur explained, pointing to a set of bank statements, "you opened a shell corporation registered in Delaware under the name 'V&M Consulting.' Two days later, six hundred thousand dollars from the hotel maintenance reserve fund was transferred into that account."
Vanessa swallowed hard, her throat going completely dry.
"And here," Arthur continued, flipping to a text transcript, "are the messages between you and the site engineer. You personally offered him a kickback of fifty thousand dollars from that shell account if he agreed to alter his structural assessment of the annex floor."
"Daniel told me to do that!" Vanessa shrieked, her composure completely shattering. "He promised me we were going to be together! He said it was just a technicality!"
"Ignorance of the law is not a defense, Miss Miller," the lead investigator said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "Especially when you actively participated in a conspiracy that led to the collapse of a public building and nearly killed a seven-year-old child."
"No! Wait! I have an ankle injury! I can't go to jail!" Vanessa screamed as the officers pulled her up from her chair, pinning her arms behind her back.
Passengers in the First Class lounge pulled out their phones, video recording every second of her hysterical breakdown as she was dragged down the concourse in handcuffs, her crutches left behind on the carpet like discarded props.
By that evening, the video of Vanessa’s arrest was trending number one worldwide on social media under the hashtag #KarmaForVanessa.
Sitting in my sunlit living room back in Connecticut, watching the news report on the television while drinking fresh tea, I felt a deep, profound sense of closure.
Mason was sitting on the rug beside me, playing with a high-tech robotic building kit my father had bought him. The color had returned to his cheeks, his cough was completely gone, and his eyes were bright with childhood wonder once again.
He looked up at me, holding up a bright red plastic beam.

"Mommy, look!" Mason smiled proudly. "I built a bridge that won't ever break!"
I leaned down, kissing the top of his soft head. "That’s my brilliant boy. We build things strong from now on."
