Chapter 10 - A Foundation of Steel

The afternoon sun was warm against my skin as I walked down the stone steps into the sprawling green garden.

"Mommy! Look!" Mason yelled, catching a baseball cleanly in his leather mitt and throwing it back to Julian with perfect form. "Did you see that throw?!"

"I saw it, sweetie!" I laughed, clapping my hands. "A perfect strike!"

Julian jogged over, wiping his brow with a towel, slipping his arm around my waist and pulling me close for a soft, loving kiss. "He's getting better every week. He's going to make the varsity team in middle school for sure."

"Just like his mother," my father added, stepping out onto the terrace holding a tray of iced tea, his silver hair catching the golden sunlight.

We sat together under the shade of a massive oak tree, drinking iced tea, listening to the birds singing in the gardens, surrounded by peace, safety, and genuine love.

Looking around at my family—at my healthy, thriving son, my protective father, and the wonderful, honest man who loved me for exactly who I was—I realized that the earthquake that had destroyed Daniel’s world had actually saved mine.

It had shattered the illusion I was trapped in. It had broken the chains of abuse that had held me down for eight long years. And from the rubble of that broken hotel, I had built a life that was unshakeable, unbreakable, and infinitely beautiful.

I reached out, taking Julian’s hand in mine, resting my head against his shoulder as Mason ran across the grass toward us, his face lit up with pure, untroubled joy.

We were safe. We were whole. And our foundation was built of steel.
