Chapter 9 - A New Chapter Begins

One year after the surgery.
Our life had transformed into something beautiful, bright, and completely unburdened.
With the court-ordered restitution and the liquid assets from the divorce settlement, I opened my own interior landscape and nursery business—a dream I had shelved years ago when Robert told me it was a "waste of money." Business was thriving, and our backyard had been converted into a lush, green sanctuary filled with hydrangeas, lavender, and fruit trees.
Maya was sixteen now, a junior in high school, and varsity co-captain of her soccer team.
Her energy had returned tenfold. Her skin was glowing, her laugh echoed through the halls of our home every day, and her scar was just a thin, silver line on her lower abdomen—a reminder of her strength and survival.
One Saturday afternoon, Sarah and her family came over for a celebratory summer barbecue.
David, a kind, soft-spoken landscape architect who shared an office space near my nursery, was helping me set up the patio table. Over the past six months, David had become a gentle, supportive presence in our lives—respectful of my space, wonderfully kind to Maya, and always encouraging of my work.
"Steaks are almost ready, Helen," David smiled warmly, passing me a glass of chilled lemonade.
"Thanks, David," I smiled, looking around the patio.
Maya came running out of the house holding a soccer ball, her yellow lab puppy, Barnaby, bouncing at her heels.

"Mom! Watch this!" she called out, spinning the ball on her foot before taking a powerful strike that sent it sailing right into the practice net set up near the oak tree.
"Great shot, sweetie!" I cheered, clapping my hands.
