Chapter 2 - Into the Operating Room

At 4:45 p.m., they wheeled Maya down the long, sterile corridor toward Operating Room 4.

I walked beside the gurney, holding her small, icy fingers, kissing her forehead every few steps.

"Mom," she whispered, her voice slur-padded by the mild sedative the anesthesiologist had given her. "Is Daddy mad at me?"

My heart shattered into a million pieces. Even as her body was fighting a massive tumor, she was still carrying the guilt of her father’s emotional abuse.

"No, my sweet girl," I whispered, stroking her tangled dark hair. "Daddy is wrong. He has always been wrong. You did nothing bad. All you have to do now is close your eyes and sleep. When you wake up, the pain will be gone forever, and I will be sitting right beside you."

"You promise?"

"I promise on my life."

The double doors marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY swung closed, cutting me off.

I stood alone in the hallway, staring at the bright red IN USE light above the door. The silence of the waiting room pressed against my chest like a ton of bricks.

At 5:30 p.m., my phone buzzed again. It was a text message from Robert: “You made a scene in front of the doctors. If you expect me to cover the medical bills for this stunt, you’re mistaken. I’m changing the lock codes on the house tonight until you come to your senses and realize who manages the finances in this family.”

I stared at the glowing letters on the screen. The man I had spent sixteen years trying to please, the man I had allowed to diminish my confidence and dismiss my daughter's suffering, had locked us out while our child lay open on a surgical table.

Instead of crying, something inside me clicked into place. The timid woman who stayed quiet to keep the peace died right there in that hospital waiting chair.

I opened my phone contacts and called my sister, Sarah, a senior partner at a prominent corporate and family law firm three towns over.

"Sarah?" I said, my voice dropping into a register of absolute iron.

"Helen? What's wrong? You sound strange."

"I’m at Riverside Hospital. Maya is in emergency surgery for a massive abdominal tumor. Robert just locked us out of the house because he didn't want to pay for the medical bills."

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line, followed by the sound of papers rustling.

"Are you safe?" Sarah asked, her legal instinct kicking in instantly.

"Maya is in surgery. I am done, Sarah. I want a divorce, I want full custody, I want an emergency restraining order, and I want him cleared out of my life before Maya wakes up."

"I'm getting in my car right now," Sarah said firmly. "Don't talk to him. Don't touch the bank accounts yet. I will file an emergency motion for temporary custody and exclusive use of the marital residence within two hours."
