Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail of Greed

While the police searched Robert’s office, Sarah arrived with a forensic accountant named David Vance.

Within three hours, David had uncovered the full scope of Robert’s financial betrayal.

Robert hadn't just taken out a suspicious insurance policy on Maya; he had been secretly draining our marital assets for over two years, transferring money into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands while claiming to me that our family was "struggling financially."

He had accumulated over $400,000 in hidden funds while forcing Maya to wear hand-me-down shoes and telling me we couldn't afford to take her to a doctor.

"He was planning to leave," Sarah explained, sitting at the kitchen table spread with bank statements. "He was funneling money out of your joint accounts, preparing to file for divorce once the offshore account reached half a million. When Maya got sick, he saw an opportunity to get an extra quarter-million payout before cutting ties with both of you."

I sat at the kitchen counter, rubbing my temples, feeling a strange mix of betrayal and liberation.

The man I had lived with for sixteen years wasn't just a cold husband—he was a sociopath who calculated human life in terms of profit margins.

My phone rang. It was Dr. Lawson from the pediatric ward.

"Helen," Dr. Lawson said warmly. "Maya is sitting up, eating soft foods, and asking when she can go home. Her lab results came back completely clear. The tumor was 100% benign, and there are no signs of lingering infection."

Tears of joy sprang to my eyes. "Thank you, Dr. Lawson. Thank you for listening to me."

"You saved her life, Helen," Dr. Lawson said softly. "A mother's intuition is stronger than any diagnostic tool in the world. Never forget that."
