Chapter 3 - THE MONSTER’S MASK

Richard stood up slowly.
He didn't draw his weapon. He didn't shout. He simply adjusted his jacket, stepping directly between Ethan and Emily, shielding his daughter with his broad, muscular frame.
"Ethan," Richard said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You are going to step away from that doorway. You are going to let me take my daughter to the hospital. And then you and I are going to have a very different conversation."
Ethan let out a sharp, mocking laugh. He tossed the rest of his scotch into his mouth and set the crystal glass on a side table with a loud CLACK.
"Take her?" Ethan stepped closer, his smirk twisting into a contemptuous sneer. "She’s my wife, Richard. She signed a prenuptial agreement, she lives in my house, and she belongs to me. Do you have any idea who I am? I run a three-billion-dollar cybersecurity firm. I employ half the governor's staff. The police chief sits in my skybox at Titans games."
Ethan walked up until he was barely five feet away, pointing a manicured finger at Richard’s chest.
"You're a washed-up, retired soldier living on a government pension," Ethan spat. "You think because you played war in the desert twenty years ago you can come into my house and tell me how to handle my wife? She’s crazy, Richard. She’s unstable. She fell down the stairs because she’s on medication. Ask her!"
From behind Richard, Emily let out a terrified sob. "That’s... that’s not true! You threw me into the table! You took my keys!"
"Shut up, Emily!" Ethan roared, his suave demeanor instantly evaporating, revealing the feral, sociopathic monster underneath. "I gave you everything! This house, the cars, the clothes! And you call your pathetic father because you couldn't keep your mouth shut?!"
Ethan raised his hand, stepping forward as if to reach past Richard to grab Emily’s hair.
That was his second mistake. His first was assuming Richard Hayes was just an old man.
In one fluid, blinding motion—a move honed by decades of close-quarters combat training—Richard grabbed Ethan’s raised wrist, twisted it violently outward, and drove his palm directly into the center of Ethan’s chest.
THUMP!
Ethan flew backward through the air, crashing hard onto his back on the hardwood floor, the wind knocked completely out of his lungs with a sickening gasp.
Ethan scrambled backward like a crab, clutching his wrist, his eyes wide with shock and rage. "You... you hit me! You assaulted me in my own home!"
"I haven't assaulted you yet, Ethan," Richard said, taking three slow steps toward the lying man, his shadow swallowing Ethan completely. "If I assault you, they will need a shovel to clear you off this floor. Now, give me her keys and her purse."
Ethan sneered, reaching into his suit pocket. "You think you won, old man? Look up."
Richard glanced at the ceiling corner. A small red LED light was blinking on a concealed dome camera.
"That camera streams directly to an off-site cloud server," Ethan laughed, wiping a speck of dust from his pants as he slowly stood up, keeping his distance. "It recorded you kicking my front door open. It recorded you putting your hands on me. By tomorrow morning, you’ll be sitting in a federal prison cell for home invasion, and Emily will be back right here where she belongs."
Ethan smiled—a sick, triumphant, arrogant grin. "You lose, Colonel. You always lose."
Richard looked at the blinking red light. Then he looked down at his collar, where the discreet lens of his military body-camera had been recording every single frame, every drop of Emily’s blood, and every word of Ethan’s confession since the moment he stepped out of his truck.
"You really don't know who I brought with me, do you, Ethan?" Richard said softly.

Suddenly, the house’s automated fire alarm system began to blare. Sprinklers erupted overhead, raining cold water down on the hardwood floors.
Outside the grand front windows, the roaring engines of three heavy black SUVs echoed through the courtyard.
