Chapter 10 - THE NEW BEGINNING

One year later.

The grand dining room of the old Mercer estate had been completely transformed.

The dark, suffocating Victorian wood panels had been torn down and replaced with warm, light maple. The heavy, intimidating chandeliers were gone, replaced by soft, modern architectural lighting that let the natural sunlight flood through the glass walls.

The estate no longer belonged to the Mercer family.

Claire had gifted the house to the state as the new headquarter facility for The Hale Foundation for Domestic Safety—a non-profit organization dedicated to providing legal, financial, and physical sanctuary for women escaping high-net-worth domestic abuse and coercive control.

On a bright Sunday afternoon, the grand dining room was filled with laughter, chatter, and the warm aroma of good food.

Dozens of women, along with their children, sat around long, bright oak tables covered in summer flowers and white porcelain plates. Volunteers moved through the room, serving roasted chicken, fresh summer salads, and warm bread.

At the head of the main table sat Daniel Ross, laughing while showing a eight-year-old girl how to perform a simple card trick. Lillian Sterling sat nearby, sharing a glass of white wine with Dr. Patel as they discussed the foundation's new medical outreach center.

Claire stood near the double doors, watching the room with a gentle, serene smile.

I walked over to stand beside her, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade.

"It looks completely different in here," I said softly, handing her a glass.

"No," Claire said, looking around at the bright, happy faces filling the room. "It looks the way it was always supposed to look."

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and looked at the screen.

It was an automated legal notice from the Department of Corrections: INMATE #88392-G (MERCER, GRANT) PAROLE PETITION DENIED. NEXT REVIEW: 2029.

Claire looked at the notification for two seconds. She didn't flinch. She didn't frown. She didn't even sigh.

She simply swiped the notification away, slid the phone back into her pocket, and looked back at the warm, sunlit room in front of her.

"Are you ready for your speech, CEO?" I asked with a smile.

Claire turned to me, her eyes shining with pure, untamed light. She wrapped her arm around my waist, leaning her head gently against my shoulder—just as she had done on that dark, terrifying night eighteen months ago.

Only this time, there was no sling.

There was no fear.

May you like

There was only strength.

"I'm ready, Mom," Claire said softly, stepping forward into the light of the full room, her voice clear, powerful, and free. "Let's begin."
