Chapter 5 - THE AUDIT

By two o'clock in the morning, the top floor of the Hale Trust Building in downtown was lit up like a beacon.

While the city slept, seven financial forensics analysts sat at a long glass table covered in glowing dual monitors, spread-out spreadsheets, and physical printouts pulled from Grant’s home study.

Claire sat in a plush armchair in the corner of my private office, a warm mug of chamomile tea in her left hand. Dr. Patel had arrived an hour earlier, carefully examining her shoulder, re-dressing the brace, and documenting the dark purple bruises with official medical imaging.

"The collarbone isn't fractured, thank God," Dr. Patel said quietly to me near the window, out of Claire’s earshot. "But the soft tissue damage is severe. He used significant force, Margaret. If she had fallen against a hard edge during that struggle, we’d be talking about a broken neck."

My jaws clenched, but I kept my face composure calm. "Thank you, Naveen. Make sure the full forensic medical report is filed directly with Detective Miller by eight AM."

"It's already drafted," Naveen said, pressing my hand gently before leaving the room.

Lillian Sterling walked into the office, carrying a steaming cup of dark coffee and a fresh stack of bank statements.

"It's worse than we thought," Lillian said, dropping the file onto my oak desk. "Grant wasn't just siphoning money for a rainy day fund. He was bleeding Mercer Dynamics dry to cover massive personal gambling liabilities in Macau and Cayman-based crypto exchanges."

I opened the file. "How much?"

"Fourteen million dollars over eighteen months," Lillian said. "He was using fake invoices from dummy suppliers in Panama—the exact files Claire found on his home network. He knew the board audit was coming up for his COO confirmation, so he was planning to frame Arthur Vance for the missing capital."

Claire looked up from her chair, her voice quiet. "He told me... he told me if I ever spoke to anyone, he would make sure my mother lost her house. He said he had enough leverage to destroy the Hale Trust."

"He was bluffing, Claire," I said, walking over and kneeling beside her chair. "Bullies like Grant construct giant, terrifying illusions out of thin air. They make you believe they hold all the cards because they know that if you look at them closely for even five seconds, you'll see they have nothing at all."

Daniel Ross knocked on the open door frame and stepped inside. He had removed his tie, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

"The District Attorney just signed off on the formal indictment," Daniel reported. "Grand Larceny in the First Degree, Falsification of Business Records, Corporate Embezzlement, and Felony Domestic Battery with Coercive Control. Bail is set at two million dollars, full cash bond, with a comprehensive restraining order issued for Claire and you, Margaret."

"Did Evelyn try to post it?" I asked.

Daniel chuckled softly, a dry, dark sound. "Evelyn went to the bank at midnight to transfer funds from her family trust account. She found out ten minutes ago that the Hale Trust froze all Mercer family liquidity pending the corporate audit. She’s currently sitting on a plastic chair in the precinct waiting room, screaming at the desk sergeant."

Claire let out a small sound—halfway between a laugh and a sob. She covered her face with her left hand, her shoulders shaking.

"I was so scared, Mom," Claire whispered, the tears spilling through her fingers. "Every day for six months... every time I heard his car in the driveway, my heart felt like it was going to burst. I thought I was trapped forever."

May you like

I took her trembling hand and held it firmly.

"You were never trapped, my darling," I said softly. "You were just waiting for your evidence to assemble. And now, we are going to tear his entire world down to the foundation."
