Chapter 6 - THE COUNTERSTRIKE

At eight o'clock the following morning, the Mercer Dynamics headquarters building was surrounded by local news vans and financial journalists.

The story had broken at dawn: MERCER DYNAMICS COO CANDIDATE ARRESTED IN MIDNIGHT RAID ON FELONY DOMESTIC AND EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGES.

Inside the top-floor boardroom—the very room where Grant had intended to celebrate his coronation—the twelve members of the board sat in total, stunned silence.

Arthur Vance sat at the end of the long mahogany table, looking like he had aged ten years overnight. Beside him, Evelyn Mercer sat rigidly, her eyes red-rimmed, wearing a dark coat and giant dark sunglasses to hide her exhaustion. Her legal representative sat beside her, whispering furiously into her ear.

The heavy doors opened.

I walked in first, wearing my dark blue tailored wool suit—the same suit I had worn fifteen years ago when I won my final murder conviction in the State Supreme Court.

Behind me walked Claire. She wore a simple white blouse, her black arm sling clean and stark against her light clothes, her chin held high, her eyes clear and steady. Lillian Sterling and Daniel Ross flanked us like twin pillars of iron.

"Margaret," Arthur Vance stammered, half-standing from his chair. "We... we were just reviewing the emergency press release."

"Sit down, Arthur," I said smoothly, taking the chair at the head of the table—the chair reserved for the Chairman of the Board.

Evelyn slammed her hand down on the polished wood. "You have no right to sit there! This is a family company! My family’s name is on the building!"

"Your family's name is on the police blotter, Evelyn," Lillian Sterling snapped, opening her briefcase and laying out twelve identical blue folders in front of the board members. "If you open document A, you will find the formal resolution passed by the Hale Trust one hour ago."

The board members eagerly opened the folders, their eyes scanning the legal text.

"As majority shareholder," Lillian continued, "the Hale Trust hereby exercises its statutory right under Section 22 to remove Arthur Vance as Chairman for gross negligence and fiduciary failure."

Arthur gasped, falling back into his seat. "Margaret! After all these years?!"

"You knew he was volatile, Arthur," I said, fixing him with a icy stare. "You saw the signs of financial irregularities three months ago and you looked the other way because you wanted his offshore connections. You sacrificed my daughter’s safety to protect your stock options."

"I... I didn't know he was hitting her!" Arthur protested desperately.

"You didn't care enough to ask," Claire spoke up. Her voice echoed off the glass walls, firm, sharp, and commanding. The board members turned to look at her in surprise. "Every time I came to company events with bruises covered in heavy makeup, you made jokes about my 'clumsiness.' You all did."

The board members looked down at their folders, unable to meet her gaze.

"Document B," Lillian Sterling announced, her voice slicing through the thick guilt in the room, "is the immediate appointment of Claire Mercer-Hale as interim Chief Executive Officer of Mercer Holdings."

Evelyn jumped out of her chair, her sunglasses slipping down her nose. "WHAT?! That girl?! She’s a helpless housewife! She knows nothing about running an international conglomerate!"

"That 'helpless housewife' is a graduate of Columbia Business School, Evelyn," I said calmly. "A degree she set aside four years ago because your son convinced her that her only purpose in life was to decorate his house and roast his beef."

Claire stepped forward, resting her good hand flat on the mahogany table.

"I spent the last six months analyzing your balance sheets, gentlemen," Claire said, looking around the room at the eleven stunned men. "I know where every dollar of hidden debt is buried. I know which suppliers are real and which ones are Grant's personal shells. By noon today, I will have the restructured corporate governance plan ready for a full shareholder vote."

She turned her eyes slowly toward Evelyn.

"And as interim CEO," Claire added, her voice chillingly quiet, "my first official act is the total liquidation of all Mercer family executive perks, corporate housing allowances, and discretionary legal defense funds. Effective immediately."

Evelyn gasped, clutching her neck. "You... you little monster! You're robbing us!"

"No, Evelyn," Claire said, leaning in close to her mother-in-law. "I'm just auditing you."
