Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

When the verdict was read, the courtroom was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Guilty.
Guilty of attempted premeditated murder, treason, corporate espionage, and grand fraud.
The judge looked down at Richard with unyielding sternness.
"Mr. Hayes," the judge declared, "you demonstrated an appalling, sociopathic disregard for human life— targeting not only your wife, who trusted you, but your own unborn child, purely out of base material greed. You are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."
Richard broke down completely, sobbing and screaming as court officers clamped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists and dragged him away from the defense table.
As they pulled him toward the side exit, he looked back at me one last time, his eyes full of desperate, pathetic pleading.
"Amelia! Please!" he cried out, his voice echoing off the high stone walls. "I loved you! I was desperate! Please help me!"

I didn't utter a single word. I simply looked at him with cool detachment, resting my hand gently over my stomach, until the heavy doors slammed shut behind him forever.
The man who had tried to cast me into the deep abyss had finally pulled the cage doors down upon himself.
