Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Ghost

The high-profile trial of Richard Vance-Hayes rocked the nation. The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity, with cameras streaming the event to tens of millions of viewers worldwide.

Richard sat at the defense table, looking hollowed out and gaunt. His suit hung loosely on his frame, his hair messy, his eyes darting frantically around the room. His defense strategy was simple: claim severe psychological distress, argue that the police audio was fabricated or obtained illegally, and insist that without a body, there was no physical evidence of any crime beyond a tragic accident.

"Your Honor," Richard’s high-priced attorney argued before the judge, "the prosecution’s entire case relies on unverified audio recordings and circumstantial financial strain. There is no body. There is no physical proof that Mrs. Hayes did not simply slip and fall tragically from that aircraft. My client was a loving, grieving husband pushed to the brink of madness by false accusations!"

The prosecutor, standing calmly, turned toward the judge.

"Your Honor," the prosecutor said, "the state agrees that physical testimony is paramount. Which is why we would like to call our final surprise witness to the stand."

The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom slowly swung open.

The entire courtroom went dead silent. Reporters gasped. Cameras flashed in a frantic frenzy.

I walked down the central aisle in a tailored emerald-green dress that clearly showcased my full eight-month pregnancy bump. I walked with my head held high, flanked by federal officers, my eyes locked directly onto my husband.

Richard froze. He scrambled backward in his chair, knocking over his glass of water, his face turning ghostly white as if he were looking at an actual phantom.

"No..." he whimpered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "No... it's impossible! You... you died in the ocean! I watched you fall!"

I stepped into the witness box, took the oath, and sat down comfortably. Then, I looked across the quiet room directly into Richard's terrified eyes.

"Surprise, darling," I said softly.
