Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Web

The courtroom exploded into utter chaos before the judge repeatedly slammed his gavel, demanding order. When silence was finally restored, the prosecutor turned to me.
"Mrs. Hayes," the prosecutor asked, "can you please explain to the court how you survived a three-thousand-foot drop from a helicopter?"
I smiled calmly, laying out every single detail for the jury.
I explained how I had noticed Richard's subtle shifts in behavior months prior—his secret meetings with foreign lenders, his inquiries about my cause-of-death insurance clauses, and his sudden interest in taking me on a private, unmonitored flight without a secondary crew.
I produced the digital schematics of the custom military-grade parachute built into my coat, the telemetry logs from my biometric watch, and the high-definition video recorded from the yacht that rescued me three minutes after I hit the water.
"Richard believed he was planning the perfect murder," I testified, my voice resonating with unbreakable strength across the courtroom. "He thought my pregnancy made me vulnerable, weak, and easily distracted. He didn't realize that protecting my child gave me a focus far greater than his greed."
As I spoke, the prosecutor displayed the intercepted financial records on the wall monitors: Richard’s secret offshore accounts, his forged signature attempts on my trusts, and his correspondence with black-market brokers.

Richard sat frozen at his table, tears of anger and panic streaming down his face as his lawyer buried his head in his hands. The mountain of evidence was absolute, bulletproof, and undeniable.
The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
