Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Matriarch

The board members immediately leaned forward, frantically whispering to one another as they examined the handwritten note and the matching bank wire receipts Richard’s security team had uncovered.

"Mrs. Sterling," Senator Davis, a senior board trustee, spoke up, his face red with shock. "If this document is authentic, Charles Sterling committed federal kidnapping and child trafficking. The board cannot shield you from a criminal investigation."

"This is madness!" Evelyn shouted, standing up from her chair, her cane rattling against the floor. "I am the head of this family! You owe your positions on this board to my family’s name!"

"Your family name is built on a crime, Mother," Eleanor said coldly, stepping beside her two sons. "And it ends today."

From the back of the ballroom, the double doors opened.

Two state prosecutors and four Rhode Island state troopers walked in, led by Arthur Pendelton.

"Evelyn Sterling," the lead prosecutor announced, pulling an arrest warrant from his coat. "You are being detained for questioning regarding conspiracy to commit kidnapping, evidence tampering, and financial fraud connected to the Sterling Trust."

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

Evelyn Sterling stood frozen, surrounded by her priceless antique paintings, her grand estate, and her billions, looking suddenly frail, small, and hopelessly old.

As the state troopers gently escorted the disgraced matriarch out of the ballroom, she looked at Leo one last time. Leo didn't look at her with hatred. He looked at her with pity, then turned his back to watch the rain falling over the ocean.

"Is it over?" Julian whispered, grabbing Leo’s arm.

"No," Richard said, coming up behind his two boys and placing a hand on each of their shoulders. "It's just beginning. The trust is unlocked. And it belongs entirely to both of you."
