Chapter 2 - The Stolen Son

The private wing of Lenox Hill Hospital was quiet, illuminated by the soft glow of fluorescent lights.

Leo sat on the edge of a private hospital bed, wrapped in a warm blanket, a fresh IV line dripping fluids and nutrients into his arm. His feet had been cleaned and bandaged, and for the first time in years, he had eaten a warm meal.

Julian sat in a chair beside the bed, watching his brother with a mixture of wonder and deep sorrow. He handed Leo a fresh glass of apple juice.

"So..." Julian began quietly. "Your name is Leo?"

Leo nodded slowly, staring down at his bandaged hands. "The locket had the name inside. The woman who raised me... she told me my name was Leo."

"The woman who raised you?" Eleanor asked, stepping closer. She had refused to leave the room for a single second. "Leo... sweetie... who raised you? Where have you been all these years?"

Leo took a slow sip of the juice. "Her name was Martha. She used to work as a night nurse at Bellevue Hospital fourteen years ago. The night you gave birth."

Eleanor gasped, covering her mouth.

"Martha raised me in a small apartment in Queens," Leo continued, his voice monotone, as if he were reciting a bad dream he had memorized. "She wasn't mean, but she was sick. She had a lot of debts. When I was ten, she got really sick and told me the truth before she died in the hospital."

"What did she tell you?" Julian asked, leaning forward.

"She said a rich man paid her fifty thousand dollars to take me away the night we were born," Leo said, his eyes shifting toward the door where Richard Vance was pacing outside in the hallway. "She was supposed to take me to an orphanage in upstate New York, but she felt guilty, so she kept me. When she died four years ago... social services came for me, but I ran away. I've been on the streets ever since."

Tears streamed silently down Eleanor’s face. She fell to her knees beside the bed, taking Leo’s rough, calloused hand in hers. "Fifty thousand dollars... someone paid to steal my baby..."

Suddenly, the hospital room door swung open.

Richard Vance walked in, accompanied by two high-priced corporate attorneys wearing identical dark suits. Richard looked composed, his emotional breakdown from the sidewalk completely buried beneath a wall of legal arrogance.

"Eleanor, we are leaving," Richard declared, not looking at Leo. "The attorneys have arranged for this boy to be transferred to a private residential facility in Westchester where he will receive proper care and counseling."

"A facility?" Eleanor stood up, her posture rigid with fury. "He is our son, Richard! He is coming home with us to the townhouse!"

"He cannot come to the townhouse, Eleanor!" Richard snapped, stepping closer and dropping his voice to a harsh whisper. "Do you have any idea what this would do to the family? To the firm? The press would have a field day! A secret twin sold at birth? Vance Capital would lose half its institutional investors overnight!"

"You care about your stock price more than your own blood?!" Julian yelled, standing up to face his father.

"Julian, keep your voice down!" Richard barked. "You don't understand how the real world works! This... this kid has been living on the streets for four years! He doesn't fit into our world! We will pay for his education, his housing, his medical bills, but he cannot be publicly recognized as a Vance!"

Leo watched the argument quietly. He slowly pulled the warm blanket off his shoulders, slid his legs over the side of the bed, and reached for his dirty sneakers.

"Leo, what are you doing?" Eleanor asked frantically, rushing to his side.

"I'm leaving," Leo said simply, his voice flat. "I didn't come to break up your family. I just wanted to know if my mother was real. Now I know."

"No!" Eleanor grabbed Leo’s arms, her eyes wild with motherly desperation. She turned to Richard, her voice dropping to a icy, lethal register that made even the two attorneys shift uncomfortably.

"If Leo doesn't come home with us tonight, Richard," Eleanor spoke clearly, "I will file for divorce by eight o'clock tomorrow morning. I will call a press conference on the steps of City Hall, and I will tell every news anchor in America that my husband discarded his own child to protect his hedge fund."

Richard stared at his wife, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. He realized, with sudden, terrifying clarity, that the compliant, socialite wife he had managed for fifteen years was officially gone.
