Chapter 4 - The Sterling Legacy

The revelation sent shockwaves through Richard’s mind.

Charles Sterling—Eleanor’s father—had been an old-money shipping magnate who built the Sterling empire with an iron fist. He had despised Richard when Eleanor married him, viewing Richard as a ruthless middle-class climber who was only after the family fortune. Charles had died eight years ago, leaving his entire multi-billion-dollar empire in a strict trust for Eleanor and her heirs.

Richard locked the study door, his hands trembling as he flipped through the old bank statements inside the manila folder.

Why would Charles Sterling pay a nurse to steal one of his own newborn grandsons?

Suddenly, the pieces of a dark puzzle began to align in Richard’s head.

Fourteen years ago, Charles Sterling’s will had a very specific clause: If Eleanor produces a single male heir, the entire Sterling Trust unlocks upon the child's eighteen birthday, managed exclusively by the child's father. However, if multiple heirs exist, the trust remains locked in an independent board of trustees until all heirs reach thirty years of age.

Richard sat back in his leather chair, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.

Charles Sterling hadn't stolen Leo to hurt Eleanor. He had done it to prevent Richard from getting control of the Sterling Trust. By ensuring Eleanor only appeared to have one surviving son, the trust rules were manipulated.

"My God..." Richard whispered to the empty room. "The old man played us all from beyond the grave."

Just then, his cell phone buzzed on the desk. An incoming call from an unlisted number.

Richard picked it up. "Hello?"

"Richard," a raspy, elderly female voice spoke through the speaker. "I hear you found the other boy."

Richard’s blood ran cold. The voice belonged to Evelyn Sterling—Eleanor’s mother, the matriarch of the Sterling family, who lived in a grand estate in Newport, Rhode Island, and hadn't spoken to Richard in five years.

"Evelyn," Richard said, his voice tightening. "Did you know about this?"

"My husband did what was necessary to protect our family's fortune from a parasite like you, Richard," Evelyn said coldly. "And if that street urchin stays in your house, he will trigger the board oversight clause. The trust will be frozen instantly, and your hedge fund will collapse without the Sterling collateral."

"He is my son! He is Eleanor’s son!" Richard yelled, forgetting his usual composure.

"He is a threat to our dynasty," Evelyn replied, her tone sharp as diamond. "Send him away, Richard. Make him vanish back into the streets where he belongs. Or I will cut off Vance Capital’s credit lines by tomorrow morning, and you will be bankrupt before the weekend."

The line went dead.
