Chapter 8 - The Crucible of Truth

The public exoneration was a victory, but the deep-seated corporate cancer within Harrison Medical Technologies had metastasized far beyond Victor Sterling. Two weeks after the Westin Hotel ambush, Michael sat alone in his high-floor executive office, staring out at the rain-slicked skyline of Seattle. On his desk lay a encrypted drive delivered anonymously to his private residence the night before.

When he inserted the drive, a series of audio logs played through the high-fidelity speakers. The voice was unmistakable: Victor Sterling, speaking to a shadowy third party whose voice was heavily modulated.

"Michael Harrison is soft," Sterling’s recorded voice sneered. "He has his father’s sentimentality. He thinks research is about saving lives. We sell hope, but we monetize delay. If Aegis-9 is perfected too quickly, the long-term therapeutic subscriptions vanish."

The second voice answered, sharp and calculated. "Ensure the Vance girl takes the fall. And if Michael digs too close to the offshore accounts, remind him what happened to his father’s car in 2019."

Michael’s blood ran cold.

His father’s fatal car crash on the icy roads of Snoqualmie Pass had been ruled a brake failure due to mechanical wear. For seven years, Michael had believed it was a tragic accident. Now, the dark reality stared him in the face: his father had been assassinated by the very board members he trusted.

Michael immediately summoned Marcus Vance into the office.

"Marcus," Michael said, his tone devoid of all warmth, a chilling quietness settling over him. "Reopen the 2019 investigation into my father’s accident. And track down the origin of this encrypted file."

Marcus picked up the drive, inspecting the casing. "Boss, this signal was routed through a server in Zurich, but the digital signature matches an old internal node from within this building. Someone inside Harrison Medical wanted you to hear this."

Before Michael could respond, his private line rang. It was Clara. Her voice was taut with sudden panic.

"Michael," she whispered, her breathing ragged. "I’m at the Harrison Research Facility in Bellevue. Someone purged the central database twenty minutes ago. All the primary clinical safety logs for the modified Aegis-9... gone."

Michael stood up so fast his leather chair crashed into the windowpane. "Clara, stay where you are. Don't touch anything. Marcus and I are coming to you."

"It’s not just the data, Michael," Clara said, her voice dropping into a terrified tremble. "The facility’s automated containment protocol just triggered. The security system locked the doors from the outside. The ventilation systems are shutting down."

The trap had been sprung. Victor Sterling was in a federal holding cell, but his silent syndicate partner was still active—and moving to destroy the evidence, the drug, and Clara Vance once and for all.
