Chapter 2 - The Sanctum on First Hill

The interior of the Maybach felt like a different universe.
The three-zone climate control hummed at seventy-four degrees. The smell of expensive leather, cedarwood, and clean rain filled the air as Michael pulled out into traffic, bypassing the freeway to head directly toward his private gated estate on First Hill.
In the back seat, Olivia sat unbuckled next to Clara, her small hands gently patting the pink coat wrapped around the infant.
"Her name is Maya," Clara whispered, her body shivering violently as the car’s heat began to thaw her frozen muscles. "She's... she's three months old."
"She’s very tiny," Olivia observed softly, her blue eyes wide. "Daddy, can Maria make her hot soup?"
Michael watched them through the rearview mirror. His hands held the steering wheel with such force his knuckles turned white. His mind was a chaotic storm of conflicting realities.
For five years, Clara Vance had been a ghost—a corporate traitor whose theft had nearly bankrupted his father’s legacy and delayed the distribution of a life-saving drug to thousands of sick children. He had hated her name. He had excised her from company history.
Yet, as he looked at her frail profile in the mirror, watching her press her dry lips against her daughter’s forehead while Olivia held her hand, the narrative he had believed for half a decade began to show catastrophic cracks.
If she took forty million dollars, Michael thought, his pulse hammering in his throat, why is she freezing to death on Fourth Avenue?
The Maybach glided through the heavy wrought-iron gates of the Harrison estate. The long, winding driveway was flanked by ancient pine trees bowed low under the weight of wet snow. The three-story Tudor mansion stood bathed in warm, amber light against the dark Seattle sky.
The moment the car stopped beneath the porte-cochère, the front doors of the mansion flew open.
Maria, the estate’s housekeeper who had helped raise Michael after his own mother died, rushed out wearing a heavy knitted shawl. Behind her walked Dr. David Sterling, Michael’s personal family physician, whom Michael had called from the car ten minutes earlier.
"Michael! What happened?" Maria gasped, taking in the sight of the dirty, soaking wet woman stepping out of the luxury vehicle.
"Maria, take Olivia inside and get her into a warm bath immediately," Michael ordered smoothly, stepping around the car to help Clara. "David, I need you in the guest wing. Now."
Clara tried to step onto the flagstone porch, but her legs buckled beneath her. Her knees gave out completely.
Before she could hit the ground, Michael caught her. He gathered her thin, feather-light frame into his arms, lifting her effortlessly against his chest. She felt dangerously frail, her ribs prominent beneath her soaked clothes, her body radiating an alarming, unnatural fever heat.
"I have Maya," Dr. Sterling said quickly, carefully taking the bundled infant wrapped in Olivia’s pink coat from Clara’s weak grip. "Get her upstairs, Michael! She's running a high fever!"
As Michael carried Clara up the grand mahogany staircase toward the east wing, she clutched the lapel of his wet coat with her remaining strength.
"Michael... the drug..." she gasped into his neck, her breath hot and ragged. "It wasn't... it wasn't me... they lied to you..."
"Rest, Clara," Michael said, his voice tightening as he laid her onto the massive king-sized bed in the heated guest suite. "You're safe now."
"No!" Clara wheezed, her gray eyes locking onto his face with terrifying desperation. "Listen to me! Aegis-9... it was contaminated! I hid the money to stop them... to stop your board from releasing it!"

Michael froze above her, his breath catching in his throat.
Before he could ask another question, Clara’s eyes rolled back, her hand slipped from his suit jacket, and her head fell limp against the pristine white goose-down pillows.
