Chapter 8 - The Legal Hearth

Two months later. January 2027.

The snow fell softly over the rolling hills of Sewickley, laying a thick, clean blanket of white over the stone estate.

Inside the grand library, a roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace, casting a warm, orange glow across the mahogany bookshelves, leather sofas, and Persian rugs.

Sitting around the large coffee table were all five children.

Junie was sitting on the rug, happily coloring a picture of a big yellow house with Barnaby sleeping beside her. Jonah and Eli were playing a game of chess under Miles's patient supervision, while Harper sat near the window, reading a book Arthur had recommended to her.

Sitting on the sofa, holding a stack of legal documents, was Marcus Sterling, Arthur’s senior attorney.

Across from him sat Selene and Arthur, sitting side by side.

"Everything is finalized, Selene," Marcus said, pulling a gold fountain pen from his pocket and sliding a blue folder across the table. "The state family court has officially granted you sole, permanent legal guardianship of Miles, Harper, Jonah, Eli, and Junie."

Selene reached out with a trembling hand, touching the crisp white paper.

PERMANENT LEGAL GUARDIANSHIP DECREE.

For six months, she had lived with the constant, terrifying nightmare that a social worker would knock on the door and tear those five children away from her, splitting them into separate foster homes across the state.

Now, that nightmare was gone forever.

"And," Marcus continued, sliding a second document forward, "Mr. Pendelton has executed an irrevocable trust in each child's name, guaranteeing their full healthcare, secondary education, housing, and a permanent annuity upon their twenty-fifth birthdays."

Selene looked up at Arthur, her dark eyes filling with hot, happy tears. "Arthur... this is too much. You've already given us everything."

Arthur took her hand in his—his large, warm hand completely enveloping hers, his fingers strong and comforting.

"It's not enough," Arthur whispered, looking at her with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat. "Because there's one more document I want to ask you about."

Marcus smiled, closed his briefcase, stood up, and quietly walked out of the library, closing the heavy oak doors behind him to give them privacy.

Selene looked at Arthur, her heart beating a fast, sweet rhythm against her ribs. "What document, Arthur?"

Arthur didn't pull out a paper. He reached into his vest pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

He opened it.

Inside sat a simple, breathtaking ring—a platinum band set with a flawless, radiant-cut diamond, flanked by five smaller emeralds representing the five children.

Arthur looked into her eyes, his gravelly voice dropping into a tender, nervous murmur that she had never heard from him before.

"Selene," Arthur said softly. "Three years ago, I thought my life was over. I thought this house was just a place where I waited to grow old alone. Then I saw a woman sitting in a bus shelter, freezing in eighteen-degree weather, breaking her last piece of food so five children could eat."

He leaned closer, taking both of her hands in his.

"You didn't just bring children into my house, Selene. You brought life back into my soul. You showed me what true courage, true love, and true family look like."

He looked toward the fireplace, where the five children had stopped what they were doing and were watching them with wide, hopeful eyes.

"I don't want to be just their benefactor, Selene," Arthur whispered. "I want to be their father. And I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to face the cold alone again. Will you marry me?"

Selene looked at the ring, then at Arthur’s weathered, loving face, and then at the five children who were holding their breath near the fire.

May you like

"Yes," she choked out, tears finally spilling over her cheeks like warm rain. "Yes, Arthur! A thousand times yes!"

Miles let out a loud cheer, Jonah jumped up and down, and Junie came running across the rug, throwing her small arms around both of their legs as Arthur pulled Selene into a warm, powerful embrace, kissing her with a fierce, quiet devotion that wiped away six months of pain in a single second.
