Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

The heavy brass doors at the side of the ballroom opened, and three men stepped into the light.
In the lead was Craig Miller. He was wearing a cheap, ill-fitting suit, his hair greasy, his eyes wide and bloodshot from alcohol and desperation. Beside him walked two process servers carrying legal envelopes, accompanied by a reporter from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette carrying a camera with a large flash bulb.
Craig marched straight toward the center of the ballroom, pointing a trembling, dramatic finger at Selene.
"THERE SHE IS!" Craig roared, his loud, crude voice cutting through the elegant chamber music like a sledgehammer. "THERE'S THE WOMAN WHO STOLE MY FAMILY!"
The music stopped completely. The three hundred guests turned, gasping, as photographers rushed forward, their flashes exploding in bright white bursts: FLASH! FLASH! FLASH!
Selene’s heart skipped a beat, her hand instinctually reaching for Miles, pulling him behind her velvet dress.
Richard stepped forward, a triumphant, wicked grin spreading across his face as he turned to the Board of Directors.
"Gentlemen! Ladies! Please, do not panic!" Richard shouted, his voice dripping with fake concern. "This is Craig Miller! The legal guardian of the children Arthur has illegally harbored at the Sewickley estate!"
Craig stepped up, standing three feet from Selene, smelling heavily of cheap whiskey.
"She took them in the middle of the night!" Craig screamed for the cameras, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Their mother—my late fiancé—left those children to ME! Selene Sterling is an unfit, unstable woman who kidnapped those kids from my care and sold them to Arthur Pendelton for a luxury lifestyle!"
The crowd broke into frantic, horrified whispers:
"Kidnapped?!"
"My God, Arthur bought homeless children?!"
"Is this true?!"
The reporter stepped forward, thrusting a microphone toward Arthur’s face. "Mr. Pendelton! Did you pay Miss Sterling to bring those children to your estate?! Are you facing kidnapping charges?!"
Miles, terrified by the bright flashes, squeezed Selene’s hand tightly, his shoulders shaking.
Richard walked up beside Arthur, laying a fake, sympathetic hand on his brother's shoulder, looking directly at the news cameras.
"As Vice Chairman of Pendelton Logistics," Richard announced grandly, "I must publicly distance our firm from this horrifying moral tragedy. I am calling an emergency board meeting right now to remove my brother from his position due to severe mental incompetence and criminal endangerment!"
Selene felt a wave of cold panic rising in her chest. Everything they had built—the safety of the children, the quiet warmth of the house, Arthur’s reputation—was about to be torn apart by a shameless, desperate lie.
She looked at Arthur.
Arthur hadn't moved. He hadn't flinched. He stood like a mountain in the storm, his eyes calm, dark, and utterly unbothered.
He slowly reached into his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a small, silver remote control.
