Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

A loud, clear audio track boomed through the ballroom's high-grade sound system:

RICHARD’S VOICE (RECORDED):

"Bring Mr. Miller to my office. Let's see how much he's willing to lie for fifty thousand dollars..."

The ballroom went dead silent.

On the massive high-definition screen, a clear video recording began to play.

It showed Richard’s corner office at Pendelton Logistics, filmed from a hidden camera disguised as a smoke detector.

In the video, Richard sat across from Craig Miller, sliding a thick brown envelope full of hundred-dollar bills across the glass table.

RICHARD (ON VIDEO):

"Here's twenty-five thousand upfront, Craig. All you have to do is show up at the gala, tell the reporters that Selene kidnapped the kids, and say Arthur paid her off. Once the board removes Arthur on Monday, you get the other twenty-five grand, and I'll make sure CPS takes the kids so they're out of the picture forever."

CRAIG (ON VIDEO):

(Grinning, snatching the money)

"Deal, boss. That bitch Selene thinks she's smart, but she's got nothing. I'll make her look like a monster."

The video ended.

The silence in the grand ballroom was so heavy you could hear the fizz of champagne bubbles in glass cups.

Craig Miller’s face turned from red to an ash-white, dead grey. He dropped his hands, looking around the room at three hundred wealthy, influential people staring at him with pure, unadulterated disgust.

Richard Pendelton stood frozen, his eyes wide as saucers, his scotch glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the marble floor: CRASH!

"I... I..." Richard stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "That... that's a deepfake! It's altered!"

Arthur stepped forward, taking two slow, heavy steps toward his younger brother.

"My personal security team monitored your office the moment you contacted Mr. Vance, Richard," Arthur said, his deep voice carrying into every corner of the room. "The recording is certified authentic by the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office."

At that exact moment, the main mahogany doors swung open for the third time.

Four uniformed officers from the Pittsburgh Police Department, accompanied by two detectives from the Major Crimes Division, marched into the room.

"Richard Pendelton? Craig Miller?" the lead detective called out, pulling a set of handcuffs from his belt. "You are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit extortion, subornation of perjury, and child endangerment."

The officers stepped up, pulling Craig's arms behind his back with a sharp CLICK-CLICK of metal cuffs.

Craig began to wail hysterically: "It was his idea! He paid me! I didn't do anything!"

The second officer grabbed Richard’s wrists, forcing his arms behind his back.

"Arthur! Tell them!" Richard shrieked, thrashing against the officer's grip as he was dragged past the Board of Directors. "I'm your brother! You can't do this to family!"

Arthur looked at his brother with a cold, clear, and quiet finality.

"Family doesn't destroy children for money, Richard," Arthur said softly. "You stopped being my brother the moment you put a price tag on those five kids."

The crowd parted in absolute silence as the police dragged Richard and Craig out of the ballroom into the waiting police cars outside.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors, an elderly man with silver hair, stepped up to Arthur, taking his hand and shaking it firmly.

"Arthur," the Chairman said, looking over at Selene and Miles with deep respect. "I apologize for ever doubting your judgment. Your position as Chairman is secure for life."

Arthur smiled warmly, turned to Selene, and offered her his arm once more.

"Shall we go home, Selene?" he asked softly. "The children are waiting."

Selene slipped her gloved hand into his arm, her heart lighter than it had been in years. "Yes, Arthur. Let's go home."
