Chapter 2 - The Contract of the Shadows

Inside the armored SUV, the temperature was perfectly regulated, instantly chasing away the chill that had gripped my bones. Blake held a glass of warm amber liquid to my lips, watching me with an intensity that made my heart race.

"Drink," he commanded softly.

I took a sip, feeling the liquid burn a comforting path down my throat. "Thank you," I murmured, leaning back against the leather seats. "You arrived exactly when you said you would."

"I would have arrived sooner if the traffic on the bridge hadn't been backed up," Blake replied, his jaw tightening. "If I had known what that pathetic excuse of a father was going to do to you, I would have leveled that entire plaza before the ceremony even started."

People in Miami knew Blake Campbell as a ruthless tycoon, but very few knew the truth of our arrangement. Six months ago, my father had tried to force me into an arranged marriage with an abusive older investor to save his failing shipping company. Desperate, I had fled and practically thrown myself in front of Blake's car, offering him a business proposition. Blake needed a wife to fulfill a strict clause in his grandfather's multi-billion-dollar will, and I needed protection and a weapon to destroy the family that had abused me my entire life.

We had signed a strict, confidential two-year marriage contract. No romance. No strings attached. Just mutual benefit. But tonight, looking at the dark fury in his eyes, the lines of our contract felt dangerously blurred.

"What happens now?" I asked, looking down at my ruined dress.

"Now, the trap snaps shut," Blake said, a cruel, beautiful smile touching his lips. "Your father thinks pulling the bridge loan is the worst that can happen. He has no idea that I bought out forty percent of his company's debt through various shell corporations over the last three weeks. By tomorrow morning, I will be his primary creditor."

"And Penelope?" I asked, remembering her triumphant laughter as I fell into the water.

"Her new husband, Arthur Pendelton, comes from an old-money family that relies heavily on our shipping routes through the Caribbean," Blake explained, reaching out to brush a stray, damp lock of hair from my forehead. His touch was warm, making me shiver for a completely different reason. "I've already ordered a freeze on all Pendelton cargo vessels entering our ports. By tomorrow afternoon, her new in-laws will realize that marrying Penelope Vance was the most expensive mistake they ever made."

I closed my eyes, letting the exhaustion wash over me. The war had officially begun, and for the first time in my life, I wasn't the one fighting alone.
