Chapter 8 - The Final Test

Life, however, rarely moves in a straight line without one final twist.

At thirty-nine weeks pregnant, while Roman was finalizing the closure of the old family estate, I stayed at our new Montauk cliffside home accompanied by a full security team and two nurses.

It was a peaceful afternoon until Lucas hurried into the living room, his face tense.

"Mrs. Kane," Lucas said quietly. "We have a situation. Arthur Kane just posted bail using his remaining liquidated assets. He was spotted heading east on the highway."

Arthur Kane—the disgraced uncle who had lost his fortune and status because of Roman’s swift corporate retaliation—had gone off the deep end. Driven by desperation and rage, he blamed us for his total financial ruin.

Before Lucas could order a perimeter lockdown, the sound of screeching tires echoed outside the driveway.

Arthur’s black SUV smashed through the outer wooden gate of the property. He stepped out of the vehicle, holding a heavy iron crowbar, his eyes wildly bloodshot, looking completely unhinged.

"Roman!" Arthur screamed frantically at the house. "Come out here, you arrogant bastard! You took everything from me! You ruined my life!"

The security guards immediately drew their weapons, moving to surround him. "Drop the weapon, Mr. Kane!" Lucas shouted, stepping outside onto the porch.

Inside, my breathing suddenly hitched. A sharp, intense pain shot through my lower back and radiated across my lower abdomen.

My water had broken.

"Nurse Sarah..." I gasped, leaning heavily against the kitchen counter. "It's time. The baby is coming now!"

Outside, Arthur was shouting obscenities, refusing to put down the crowbar, trying to force his way toward the front doors.

Despite the overwhelming pain of a strong contraction, I straightened my back. I wasn't going to let a bitter, ruined old man ruin the birth of my child.

I walked slowly to the front entrance, opening the large glass door.

"Bianca, stay inside!" Lucas pleaded, keeping his gun aimed at Arthur.

Arthur stopped, glaring at me with pure venom. "You... you gutter girl! You destroyed the Kane family! If it weren't for you—"

"Shut up, Arthur," I said, my voice ringing out with supreme, absolute authority.

The sheer power and calm coldness in my voice caught him completely off guard. He froze.

"Look at yourself," I said, stepping onto the porch, ignoring the pain tearing through my core. "You’re standing in my driveway with a crowbar like a pathetic common criminal. Roman didn't destroy you. Eleanor didn't destroy you. Your own greed and cowardice destroyed you."

"I have nothing left to lose!" Arthur yelled, raising the crowbar.

"You have your life left to lose," I replied coldly. "Look around you. There are six armed security officers with sights trained on your chest. You step one inch closer, and you won't live to see tomorrow. Drop the bar, turn around, and accept that you lost."

Arthur looked at my unflinching eyes, then at the lasers pointed at his chest from the security team. The reality of his utter powerlessness crashed down on him. The crowbar slipped from his trembling hands, clattering noisily onto the gravel.

He fell to his knees, sobbing hysterically as Lucas stepped forward and pinned him to the ground, calling the local police.

I turned back toward the house, letting out a sharp breath as another massive contraction hit me.

"Now..." I panted, looking at Nurse Sarah. "Get me to the delivery room. This baby isn't waiting!"
