Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

The icy rain did not slow down, and neither did the ice forming in my chest. Every drop that hit my exposed scalp felt like a needle, but the cold was nothing compared to the fiery humiliation burning through my veins. Inside that multi-million-dollar mansion behind me, Eleanor Kane—my mother-in-law—was likely sitting in her warm, gilded parlor, sipping tea, waiting for me to break.

She had orchestrated this calculated strike with horrific precision. Eleanor had invited me over under the guise of an olive branch, claiming she wanted to discuss the nursery for her future granddaughter. I had come alone, hoping against hope that eight months of carrying a Kane heir might finally thaw the woman's frozen heart. Instead, I was ambushed. Her loyal security staff cornered me in the grand dressing room, held my arms, and under Eleanor’s direct orders, a salon stylist was forced to cut off my waist-length hair until nothing remained but jagged, uneven stubble.

"A girl from the Queens gutters doesn't deserve the crown of a Kane," Eleanor had whispered in my ear as my golden-brown hair fell to the marble floor in heavy heaps. "You thought you could trap my son with a baby? You are nothing, Bianca. And now, you look like nothing."

They threw me out into the tempest, locked the heavy wrought-iron gates behind me, and left me to freeze. But Eleanor made one fatal mistake: she mistook my silence for weakness. She forgot that I didn't grow up surrounded by bodyguards and family trust funds. I grew up managing drunks, fires, and mob-adjacent extortionists in the back rooms of Midtown Manhattan. I knew how to survive.

Standing in the deluge, holding my swollen stomach, I heard it before I saw it—the roar of a twin-turbocharged V8 engine screaming through the night.

Headlights pierced the fog and rain, twin beams of blinding white light cutting through the dark river of the driveway. A black heavy-armored sedan skidded to a halt just inches from where I stood. The driver’s side door flew open, and Lucas, Roman’s chief of security, stepped out. His face was ghostly pale, his hands trembling slightly as he held an umbrella over my head.

"Mrs. Kane..." Lucas gasped, his voice choked with pure dread. "Good God... what did they do?"

Before I could answer, the rear passenger door opened.

Roman stepped out into the pouring rain, completely ignoring the storm. He didn't have a coat on—just his crisp white shirt and dark trousers. His gaze locked onto me, taking in every detail: my bare, mud-splattered feet, my soaking cream dress, my shivering hands cupping my pregnant belly, and my shorn, ruined head.

The world seemed to lose all sound. The thunder faded. The wind ceased to matter.

I had seen Roman angry before. I had seen him make high-stakes corporate acquisitions that wiped out entire rival firms overnight. But the expression on my husband’s face right now wasn't anger. It was something biblical. It was absolute, unfiltered retribution. His deep blue eyes turned completely dark, devoid of warmth, devoid of humanity.

He walked toward me slowly, as if moving through water. When he reached me, his trembling hands came up to cup my face. His thumb gently touched the ragged edge of what was left of my hair near my ear.

"Bianca," he choked out, his voice a low, raspy whisper that vibrated with raw pain. "Who did this?"

"Your mother," I rasped, my jaw shaking uncontrollably from the hypothermia setting in. "She... she said I was nothing."

Roman pulled off his tailor-made shirt in one swift motion, wrapping the warm fabric around my wet shoulders, completely unbothered by the icy rain washing over his bare chest. He lifted me into his arms with a gentleness that contrasted terrifyingly with the violent aura radiating off him. He carried me into the back seat of the car, setting me down on the leather seats like I was made of fragile glass.

He turned to Lucas, who stood frozen by the car door.

"Call Dr. Vance. Have him meet us at the penthouses in fifteen minutes," Roman ordered, his voice deathly quiet.

"Yes, Mr. Kane. And... the estate?" Lucas asked, his voice shaking.

Roman looked up at the towering, illuminated gates of the Kane mansion. The house was lit up like a fortress, silent and arrogant.

"Seal the gates from the outside," Roman commanded calmly. "Cut the power lines to the main house. Turn off the backup generators. Let my mother sit in the dark until I return."

May you like

"Roman," I whispered, reaching out to grab his sleeve from inside the car. "The baby..."

He leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine, his hot breath warming my frozen skin. "Our daughter is going to be fine, Bianca. And everyone who touched you... everyone who watched... will burn for this. I swear it on my life."
