Chapter 4 - The Social Facade Crumbles

The true extent of Chelsea and Logan’s financial house of cards began to unravel publicly over the following fortnight.
Without the leverage of my guaranteed credit, their extravagant lifestyle collapsed under its own weight. Chelsea, who had spent years positioning herself as an affluent influencer and high-society host in their Dallas neighborhood, suddenly found herself unable to cover the country club dues, the high-end catering bills, or the maintenance on their home.
The rumors spread rapidly among their social circle. The very guests who had sat in their living room eating my garlic stuffed mushrooms while I was banished to my bedroom soon learned the truth: the "helpless old man" they had ignored was actually the sole financial pillar holding up the entire household.
One evening, I received a phone call from Eleanor, an elderly neighbor from Thunderbird Road who had always been kind to me during my morning walks.
"Albert?" Eleanor’s voice was warm. "I finally got your new number from the bank teller downtown. I just wanted to call and see how you were doing."
"I am doing very well, Eleanor," I said, sitting in my clean, quiet apartment with a view of the city park. "Thank you for asking."
"I heard what happened," Eleanor admitted softly. "The whole neighborhood knows now, Albert. Chelsea threw a massive fit in her driveway yesterday when the lawn care crew refused to work without cash upfront. She tried to claim you had stolen from them, but Logan finally snapped and shouted at her in front of everyone. He told her that you had been paying for everything all along."

"It should never have come to public shouting, Eleanor," I said with a sigh.
"They brought this on themselves, my dear," she replied firmly. "You were too patient for too long. A father’s kindness shouldn't be mistaken for foolishness."
