Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The sun had dipped below the horizon by the time Ethan walked out of the Blackwood Tower and into the cool evening air. Victor was waiting by the black utility van, holding the passenger door open for him.

Claire was sitting inside, holding Noah in her arms, her eyes wide and anxious as she searched Ethan’s face for answers.

“Is it over?” she whispered as Ethan climbed into the van and pulled the door shut.

Ethan let out a long, shuddering breath, leaning his head back against the leather headrest. He looked exhausted, but for the first time in months—perhaps for the first time in his entire life—the tension had vanished from his shoulders.

“It’s over,” Ethan nodded. “Julian has been handed over to the commission. He’ll spend the rest of his days locked away in an unmarked facility up north. No trial, no appeals, no escape.”

Claire let out a ragged breath of relief, looking down at Noah, who was sleeping peacefully against her chest. “And the syndicate? What happens to you? To us?”

“The capos voted unanimously to restructure,” Ethan said, turning to look at her, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. “We’re stepping away from the illegal arms and the drug trafficking. We’re liquidating our assets into legitimate real estate, shipping logistics, and medical foundations. Starting tomorrow, the Blackwood name isn't going to be feared in the shadows anymore. It’s going to be respected in the light.”

He reached out, gently brushing his thumb across Noah’s tiny cheek before his hand settled over Claire’s trembling fingers.

“And as for us,” Ethan murmured softly, “that’s entirely up to you. But I was hoping a certain pediatric nurse might consider staying on as the permanent head of the Blackwood Medical Foundation.”

Claire stared at him, the terrifying chaos of the past week melting away into a profound, undeniable sense of peace. She smiled, her fingers intertwining with his.

“Only if I get to set the visiting hours,” she whispered.
