Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan, casting a cold, gray light across the jagged skyline of the Windy City. Inside the Cicero bunker, the tactical monitors flickered with encrypted data feeds that Victor had managed to pull from the estate’s breached servers.

“Julian isn’t waiting for us to make the first move,” Victor reported, tapping a key on the main console. “Look at this. As of 4:00 a.m., all primary accounts belonging to Blackwood Logistics have been frozen. He’s calling an emergency meeting of the syndicate capos at the downtown headquarters on Michigan Avenue for noon today. He plans to declare you legally dead, Boss, citing an 'unfortunate accident' during the estate break-in.”

Ethan crossed his arms, staring at the floor plan of the corporate skyscraper displayed on the central monitor. “He’s moving fast. He knows if he gives the capos time to think, they’ll smell the rot.”

“How many men will he have inside the building?” Claire asked, leaning over the console.

“At least fifty armed enforcers from the downtown detail,” Victor replied. “The entire perimeter will be locked down. Walking through the front door is suicide.”

“We aren't walking through the front door,” Ethan said, a cold, calculating grin spreading across his face. “Julian invited the capos to a family meeting. It’s only right that we RSVP.”

“Ethan, be realistic,” Claire argued. “Even if we manage to sneak inside, how do we prove to the capos that Julian killed Sarah and tried to suffocate Noah? They’re hardened criminals; they won't care about a sob story unless there is ironclad proof.”

Ethan reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted micro-cassette recorder—an old-school analog device that couldn't be hacked, wiped, or intercepted remotely.

“Sarah was paranoid,” Ethan said quietly. “She knew Julian was trying to push her out. Before she died, she recorded every financial transaction, every text message, and every voice memo detailing how Julian orchestrated her exile and the poisoning of her medical records. She hid it in the nursery floorboards of our childhood home.”

“And you have it?” Claire asked.

“I retrieved it the night I brought you and Noah to the estate,” Ethan said, tossing the small cassette onto the desk. “Julian thinks he erased her existence. He doesn't know she left a ghost behind.”
