Chapter 9 - The Healing of the Estate

Spring arrived in New York, bringing warm sunshine, blooming cherry blossoms, and clean, fresh air to the grounds of the Vance Estate.
With Uncle Martin, Daniel, Arthur Pierce, Viktor Kaine, and Vanessa all serving federal prison sentences, the shadows that had hung over my family’s name were completely erased. Vance Global Enterprises achieved its highest valuation in history, expanding its ethical investment branches across three continents.
The grand ballroom, once a place of deceit and cold ambition, was completely renovated. The dark velvet drapes were replaced with light linen, the heavy shadows replaced by bright, natural sunlight pouring through floor-to-ceiling glass doors that opened onto the manicured gardens.
On a quiet Sunday afternoon, I walked through the garden path, breathing in the sweet scent of fresh lavender and blooming roses.
Ahead of me stood Clara.
She wore a simple, elegant yellow sundress, her dark hair falling softly over her shoulders, laughing as she tossed breadcrumbs to the swans near the marble fountain.
I walked up behind her, wrapping my arms gently around her waist, pulling her back against my chest. She leaned into my warmth, resting her head against my shoulder, letting out a long, contented sigh.
"You look peaceful, Adrian," she whispered, turning her head to kiss my cheek.
"I am peaceful, Clara," I said softly, looking out over the water. "For six months, I thought this house was a fortress built to keep enemies out. Now I realize it’s a home meant to keep love in."
I reached into my coat pocket, pulling out a small blue velvet box.
Clara turned around in my arms, her eyes widening, her breath catching in her throat.
I didn't kneel because I was broken. I knelt on one knee in the vibrant green grass because I was whole.
I opened the box, revealing a simple, breathtaking cushion-cut heirloom diamond—the ring that had belonged to my mother, a woman who had spent her life showing kindness to everyone around her.
"Clara," I said, my voice rich with deep, unwavering emotion. "When the whole world looked at me and saw a broken empire, you looked at me and saw a human being worth protecting. You taught me that true power isn't found in boardrooms or money—it's found in loyalty, courage, and love."
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy overflowed from her eyes, sparkling like diamonds in the afternoon sun.
"Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, and making this house a home?" I asked.
May you like
Clara dropped to her knees in the grass beside me, throwing her arms around my neck, kissing me with a passion that burned away every lingering scar of the past.
"Yes!" she wept happily against my lips. "Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!"
