Chapter 7 - The Trap at the Gala

The revelation of Vanessa’s long-term connection to Viktor Kaine transformed a corporate dispute into an all-out war.
Two weeks later, the annual Manhattan Economic Summit was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was the premier event of the season, attended by international heads of state, billionaires, and industry titans.
Viktor Kaine arrived in style, wearing a sharp tailored tuxedo, his silver hair pulled back, an arrogant grin resting on his weathered face. Beside him stood Vanessa, wearing a dramatic emerald-green backless gown, covered in diamonds provided by Kaine. She held her head high, acting as though her public humiliation a month ago had never happened.
They believed they held the upper hand. Kaine had spent the last two weeks quietly buying up Vance Global short bonds, planning to launch a surprise hostile tender offer during the summit’s keynote address.
I arrived precisely at 9:00 PM, accompanied not by corporate lawyers, but by Clara.
Clara looked breathtaking. She wore a bespoke obsidian silk evening gown designed by a top Italian house, her dark hair styled in an elegant, intricate updo, a delicate diamond pendant resting against her collarbone—a gift I had given her that morning. She walked beside me not as an assistant, but as my equal.
When Vanessa saw Clara walking arm-in-arm with me, her eyes burned with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"Look at him," Vanessa sneered to Kaine as we approached the central fountain. "Bringing the servant girl as his date. He really has lost his mind."
Kaine stepped forward, holding a glass of champagne, offering a cold, predatory smile. "Adrian Vance. The man who survived a broken back only to lose his company. I hear your European board meeting yesterday was... tense."
"It was productive, Viktor," I replied calmly, taking a glass of sparkling water from a passing waiter. "Though I understand you've been quite busy buying up my short debt."
"Business is war, Adrian," Kaine chuckled smoothly. "And by midnight tonight, my consortium will hold fifty-one percent of Vance Logistics. Your father's software will belong to me, and you will be forced into an early retirement."
Vanessa stepped up beside Kaine, leaning against his arm, glaring at Clara with bitter disdain. "You should have taken my advice, Adrian. You could have been sitting in a quiet care facility in Lake Como. Now you'll be left with nothing—and you'll be sharing your poverty with a maid who cleans toilets for a living."
Clara didn't flinch. She stepped forward, her posture elegant, her voice clear, smooth, and laced with absolute confidence.
"Miss Sterling," Clara said calmly, "while you were busy picking out emeralds for tonight, the European Securities Authority executed a raid on Mr. Kaine’s shell company in Luxembourg twenty minutes ago."
Kaine’s smile froze instantly. "What did you say?"
Clara pulled a slim digital device from her beaded clutch bag, opening a live financial feed.
"Adrian didn't try to block your purchase of Vance short debt, Mr. Kaine," Clara explained with a brilliant, triumphant smile. "He authorized the issuance of those bonds specifically so your firm would buy them. The software licenses attached to those bonds were dummy assets—a honeytrap designed to trace your illegal capital transfers back to your primary accounts in Zurich."

Kaine’s face drained of color. He reached frantically into his coat pocket for his phone, which was already vibrating violently.
"As of 8:45 PM," I added smoothly, taking a sip of my water, "the Federal Reserve and Interpol froze all assets associated with Kaine Capital. You didn't buy fifty-one percent of my company, Viktor. You just spent two billion dollars buying federal arrest warrants."
