Chapter 3 - The Projection of Guilt

Panic swept through the room like an electric shock. The socialites backed away toward the walls, while the journalists scrambled to raise their cameras, flashbulbs exploding in a blinding white storm.

"Security!" Uncle Martin shouted, his voice cracking into a desperate shriek. "Security, clear the room! There's been a mistake!"

"The security team on this property answers to me, Martin," I said coldly. "And no one is leaving this room until I am finished."

At a subtle gesture from my hand, the heavy oak doors at the entrance of the ballroom were slammed shut by four armed, burly men in tactical suits—my private security detail, led by my trusted chief, Marcus.

Vanessa tried to recover her composure, though her hands were shaking violently. She took a step toward me, trying to put on her mask of dramatic concern. "Adrian... darling! This is... this is a miracle! You're walking! Why didn't you tell me? Why keep it a secret from the woman who loves you?!"

"Love?" I let out a low, humorless laugh that made her flinch. "Clara, if you would."

Clara tapped the screen of the silver tablet on her tray.

Above the grand staircase, the massive sixty-foot high-definition LED screen—usually reserved for displaying corporate branding during galas—flickered to life.

A high-definition video recording began playing, crystal-clear audio booming from the ballroom’s surround-sound speakers.

On screen, the video showed my private library from two nights ago. Vanessa stood beside Daniel, pouring whiskey.

Daniel's recorded voice: "He won’t last. The board will panic."

Vanessa's recorded voice: "Good. Once I marry him, I’ll push for medical guardianship. Then we transfer voting power. After that… Poor Adrian can recover in some quiet facility."

Daniel's recorded voice: "And the maid?"

Vanessa's recorded voice: "Fire her. She looks at him like he matters."

Murmurs erupted across the ballroom. Members of the press were practically climbing over furniture to record the screen.

Vanessa looked at the screen, then at me, her eyes wild with pure terror. "That's... that's an AI video! It's a fake! It's a fabrication designed to ruin my reputation!"

"Is this fake too, Vanessa?" I asked quietly.

Clara tapped the screen again.

The video shifted to an official bank transfer ledger from the Swiss Banking Corporation. It showed a wire transfer of $2.5 million from an offshore account registered to Vanessa Sterling sent directly to a shell company owned by Dr. Harrison—the very doctor who had signed my false medical incapacitation report. Below that were encrypted email exchanges between Arthur Pierce, Uncle Martin, and Daniel, detailing the exact division of Vance Global shares once I was sent to the asylum.

Arthur Pierce turned ghost-white, clutching his chest as he backed into the crowd. Uncle Martin tried to duck behind a pillar, but two of my security officers stepped behind him, blocking his escape.

"You thought I was trapped upstairs," I said, taking two slow, heavy steps toward Daniel. He backed away until his shoulders hit the edge of the champagne fountain. "You thought I was sitting in the dark, helpless, while you drank my liquor, touched my fiancée, and plotted to carve up my father's legacy like meat at a dinner table."

"Adrian... please," Daniel stammered, raising his hands in surrender, sweat pouring down his forehead. "We were just talking... it was just business! Vanessa came to me! She manipulated me!"

"You cowardly snake!" Vanessa shrieked, spinning around and slapping Daniel hard across the face. "You came to my apartment! You were the one who suggested pushing him off the board!"

"Enough," I said.

The single word cut through their squabbling like a guillotine blade.

Four men in dark charcoal suits pushed through the heavy ballroom doors. They were not my private guards. They wore gold pins on their lapels—agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by detectives from the State Financial Crimes Division.

Senior Lead Investigator Harris walked straight up to Arthur Pierce, Uncle Martin, and Daniel, pulling three red-sealed warrants from his coat.

"Arthur Pierce, Martin Vance, Daniel Mercer," Investigator Harris announced, his voice echoing over the silenced room. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, insider trading, wire fraud, and falsification of medical documents under state law. You have the right to remain silent."

As the officers pulled their arms behind their backs and clicked silver handcuffs over their wrists, the grand ballroom erupted into chaos. Journalists yelled questions, flashbulbs flared, and former allies stepped back to avoid being associated with the falling traitors.

Daniel looked back at me as he was dragged away, his eyes filled with pathetic, begging tears. "Adrian! We were brothers! Please!"

I didn't answer him. I turned my gaze onto Vanessa, who stood alone in the center of the floor, her white dress now looking like a shroud.
