Chapter 5 - The Snake's Nest

By the fifth day, Ethan’s physical condition had stabilized enough for him to be discharged into a secure, undisclosed safehouse provided by David’s military contacts in Scottsdale. High perimeter walls, private security, and bulletproof glass provided a temporary haven, but the war was far from over.

While David stayed with Ethan, teaching him simple drawing tricks to keep his mind off the trauma, Emily met Julian Mercer at his downtown office.

On the large glass whiteboard in Julian’s conference room, a complex web of photographs, corporate filings, and bank statements was pinned.

At the center was Eleanor Carter’s picture, flanked by Brittany’s mugshot.

"Here is how the operation worked," Julian explained, tracing a red line on the board. "Your sister Brittany wasn't just unemployed and living at home. She was acting as a courier for a regional syndicate specializing in high-value electronics and pharmaceutical theft. They targeted supply chains managed by your company, Apex Logistics."

Emily gasped. "That’s why my mother insisted I apply for the logistics direction job three years ago! She pushed me for months to take that position!"

"Precisely," Julian said. "Eleanor used your corporate credentials—hacking your home laptop while you were visiting her—to access manifest routes, delivery schedules, and driver assignments. She sold that information to the syndicate. The contraband was temporarily stored in a subterranean bunker dug out beneath the garden shed in her backyard."

"And Ethan..." Emily’s voice broke.

"On Tuesday afternoon, while you were in Seattle, Ethan was playing fetch with your mother’s dog in the backyard," Julian continued grimly. "The ball rolled behind the shed. Ethan found the hidden hatch open. He walked down into the subterranean space and saw Brittany packing boxes marked with chemical hazardous labels."

"When Eleanor found him there," Julian continued, "she panicked. She knew if Ethan mentioned the 'scary basement' to you, her multi-million dollar operation would collapse. So she locked him inside the dark, unventilated shed to terrify him into silence. When he tried to dig his way out, fracturing his wrist, she left him there without food or water for over thirty hours."

"She’s a monster," Emily whispered, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edge of the glass table. "A pure, cold monster."

"She's also desperate," Julian added. "With the federal raid on her home, her offshore accounts have been frozen. But she still has one card left to play. Her lead defense counsel, Harrison Vance, has offered a plea bargain to the District Attorney."

"What kind of bargain?"

"Brittany is willing to take full responsibility for the child abuse charges," Julian revealed. "She will claim she acted alone, that she has severe psychological issues, and that Eleanor knew nothing about the shed or the abuse. In exchange, the state drops all charges against Eleanor, leaving her free—and leaving her with full legal standing to pursue custody of Ethan under the pretense that you are an unfit mother who raised a delinquent daughter (Brittany)."

"They're throwing Brittany under the bus," Emily said, astonished. "Eleanor is sacrificing her own youngest daughter to save herself!"

"Eleanor created Brittany," Julian said softly. "And now she's disposing of her. Unless... we get to Brittany first."
