Chapter 4 - The Legal Siege

"You can't do this!" Emily screamed, tears streaming down her face as she reached for Ethan, who had woken up from the loud voices and was now crying hysterically.
"Mommy! Mommy!" Ethan sobbed, clinging to Emily’s shirt with his uninjured hand. "Don't let them take me! Don't let the noise come back!"
"Ma'am, step back!" one of the court officers ordered, putting a hand on his holstered sidearm.
David moved with blinding military speed. He grabbed the officer’s wrist, pinning it away from the gun, while his other hand grabbed the second officer by the lapel, shoving him backward into the hallway wall.
"Touch my family again, and you'll wake up in the trauma unit," David growled, his voice deathly low, eyes flaming with dangerous intent.
"David, stop!" Julian Mercer’s voice rang out from the hallway.
Julian pushed past the stunned nurses and stepped into the room, holding up a sleek tablet. "Stand down, officers! Stand down right now!"
The CPS worker glared at Julian. "Mr. Mercer, this is an official order signed by Judge Sterling!"
"And Judge Sterling’s emergency order was granted based on an ex-parte filing that concealed key evidence!" Julian shouted, tapping his tablet screen. "I just filed an emergency motion for stay with the State Appeals Court. Detective Vance has just issued a formal police notice: Eleanor Carter’s house has officially been designated an active crime scene under federal jurisdiction!"
The CPS worker frowned. "Federal?"
"That shed wasn't just a place where a child was abused," Julian revealed, looking directly at Emily and David. "Federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security raided Eleanor Carter's property two hours ago. They found high-grade encrypted communication equipment and commercial shipping manifests linked to cargo theft at Apex Logistics."
The court officers exchanged uneasy glances.
"Your order is superseded by a federal hold, ma'am," Julian told the CPS worker cleanly. "Ethan Carter is a material witness in a federal investigation. He remains in the physical custody of his mother under federal protective oversight."
The CPS worker lowered her paperwork, her face pale. "This... this wasn't in the file."
"Because your client, Eleanor Carter, didn't want it in the file," Julian said coldly. "Now, get out of this room before I have Detective Vance arrest you for obstruction."
The CPS team retreated down the hallway, leaving the room in a heavy, ringing silence.
Ethan was hyperventilating, his small chest heaving as he buried his face in Emily’s neck. "Mommy... the shed... the shed had the boxes. The dark boxes."
Emily held her son tightly, rocking him back and forth. "What boxes, baby? What did you see?"
Ethan shivered, his voice barely a whisper against her ear. "The boxes with the red skulls. Grandma told Brittany if I told anyone about the skulls, she’d put me in the hole under the dirt."

David looked at Julian. The lawyer nodded grimly.
"It wasn't an isolated act of domestic cruelty," Julian said quietly, pulling the door shut. "Your mother and sister weren't just abusing Ethan because they're sick, Emily. They were using your family home as a transit node for an international contraband smuggling ring. And Ethan accidentally stumbled onto what was hidden beneath the shed floor."
