Chapter 10 - The Echo of Laughter

That evening, as the sun dipped below the red horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep violet, fiery orange, and soft rose, the family gathered around a stone fire pit in the backyard.

The smell of roasting marshmallows filled the crisp desert air. Ethan sat between Emily and David, his mouth smeared with sticky chocolate, holding a wooden stick with a perfectly toasted marshmallow on the end.

"Mommy?" Ethan asked softly, looking up at the sky where the first evening stars were beginning to twinkle.

"Yes, my sweet boy?" Emily stroked his soft hair.

"Remember when I used to be scared of the dark?" he asked innocently.

Emily felt a faint tug in her heart, but she kept her voice light and tender. "I remember."

Ethan smiled, pointing his marshmallow stick toward the vast, starlit sky. "I'm not scared anymore. Because whenever it gets dark, I just remember that you and Daddy are always holding my hands. The dark is just where the stars show up."

David reached over, pulling both Emily and Ethan into his broad arms, kissing the top of Ethan’s head and then pressing his lips softly against Emily’s forehead.

"That's right, buddy," David said softly. "The stars always show up."

Emily looked out across the peaceful canyon.

For months, the terrifying sound that had haunted her night after night was the cold, cruel laugh of her mother over the phone in that Seattle hotel hallway—a sound of hatred that had threatened to tear her soul apart.

But as she sat there in the warm embers of the campfire, surrounded by the love of the man who had fought for them, holding the precious boy who had survived against all odds, that dark memory faded away into complete insignificance.

It was replaced by the only sound that mattered now.

The sweet, pure, ringing sound of her son’s laughter, dancing softly in the warm desert breeze, carrying them forward into a bright and endless tomorrow.
