Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Showdown

The forty-second-floor executive boardroom of Hale Technologies was a temple of corporate power. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the Chicago skyline sparkling beneath the midnight moon.
Around the massive mahogany conference table sat twelve of the most powerful board members and senior vice presidents in the tech industry. At the head of the table sat Julian Hale.
Julian wore a sharp navy suit, his blond hair perfectly styled, looking every bit the charismatic, trustworthy younger brother. He tapped his Montblanc pen against the table, looking at his wristwatch with feigned concern.
"Well, ladies and gentlemen," Julian announced, projecting his smooth, confident voice across the room. "It appears my brother Roman has been unavoidably detained tonight. Given the urgency of our merger timeline with Vance Industries, I propose we take a preliminary vote on transferring executive proxy rights in his absence—"
CLANG.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom didn't just open—they slammed violently against the interior walls, echoing like thunder through the silent room.
Every head snapped toward the entrance.
Roman Hale walked into the boardroom. He wasn't alone. Flanked by Victor and four armed federal marshals in tactical gear, Roman strode down the center aisle with the terrifying grace of an executioner.
Right beside him walked Claire Bennett, her head held high, wearing a simple dark coat, her presence a silent, undeniable declaration of war.
Julian’s face went completely, corpse-white. The Montblanc pen slipped from his fingers, clattering against the polished wood table.
"Roman..." Julian stammered, standing up so fast his chair screeched backward. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why are there armed federal agents in the executive wing?"
Roman stopped ten feet away from the head of the table. He didn't yell. He didn't rush his brother. He simply reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out the crumpled parchment letter written by his mother, and tossed it onto the glass blotter right in front of Julian.
"Sit down, Julian," Roman said, his voice dropping into a glacial whisper that made every executive in the room hold their breath. "We have a lot to discuss. And by 'we,' I mean you, the federal prosecutor waiting in the lobby, and the auditors who are currently seizing every hard drive in your private office."
Julian stared down at the letter, his eyes darting across the familiar handwriting. He knew instantly that the game was over. The trap had sprung shut.
"You're making a mistake," Julian choked out, panic creeping into his voice as he tried to maintain his composure in front of the board. "This is a family dispute! Roman, don't let outsiders ruin our company over some paranoid ramblings of a dying old woman!"
"She wasn't dying of natural causes, Julian. And she wasn't paranoid," Roman said, stepping closer until he was towering directly over his brother. "Just like Evelyn wasn't visiting her out of love. You both signed your death warrants the day you decided my mother was expendable."
Before Julian could lunge for the door, Victor and the federal marshals moved in, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.
"Julian Hale, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit murder, and accessory to second-degree homicide," the lead marshal declared, reading him his rights as they hoisted him to his feet.

As Julian was dragged out of the boardroom, his face twisted in a mask of impotent rage and hatred, he locked eyes with Claire for a fraction of a second. Claire didn't flinch. She met his gaze with absolute, unyielding strength, holding the battered storybook tightly against her chest.
The man who was going to fire her had just saved her life. And together, they had torn an empire away from the monsters who tried to burn it down.
