Chapter 10 - The Last Page

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the windows of Claire’s new apartment—a sunlit, secure, three-bedroom loft overlooking Lake Michigan, provided by Hale Technologies' executive housing fund.
Claire sat at the kitchen counter, sipping a cup of hot coffee while Lily sat cross-legged on the rug, coloring in a brand new storybook that had nothing to do with bears who lost their way.
The door-chime chimed softly.
Claire walked over and unlocked the door. Roman stood on the landing, wearing a simple gray cashmere sweater instead of his usual corporate armor. He held a fresh bouquet of yellow tulips in one hand and a thick manila envelope in the other.
"Good morning," Roman smiled, a genuine, warm expression that still occasionally caught Claire off guard.
"Morning," Claire smiled back, stepping aside to let him in. "You didn't have to bring flowers again, Roman. The security detail outside is already enough to make the neighbors think I'm a witness in a mob trial."
"You were a witness in a mob trial," Roman chuckled, stepping inside and handing the tulips to Lily, who grinned and ran off to find a vase. He turned back to Claire, his gray eyes softening as he handed her the manila envelope.
Claire took it and slid the flap open. Inside wasn't medical logs, and it wasn't a confession.
It was a permanent, ten-year employment contract making her the Director of Corporate Philanthropy and Medical Compliance for the newly founded Eleanor Hale Foundation—complete with a salary that would ensure Lily’s college tuition was paid in full before she even finished elementary school.
And beneath the contract was a second piece of paper: an invitation to dinner. Just the two of them. No offices, no bodyguards, no corporate secrets.
Claire looked up from the papers, her heart skipping a beat as she met Roman’s steady, adoring gaze.
"I'm not going to fire you, Claire," Roman murmured, reaching out to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "In fact... I think I'm going to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to work for anyone else ever again."

Claire smiled, sliding the envelope onto the counter. She reached back, pulling the battered, beloved storybook from the shelf behind her, and gently placed it back into its permanent home.
The bad guys were behind bars. The secrets had been brought into the light. And the story was finally theirs to write.
