Chapter 7 - The Second Envelope

The private helicopter touched down on the floodlit helipad of the Ashcombe estate with a deafening roar of rotor blades. Before the landing gear had even fully settled, Roman vaulted out of the cabin, sprinting across the manicured lawn toward the east wing entrance like a man possessed.

Victor and four tactical enforcers fanned out behind him, weapons drawn, scanning the shadows for any sign of Evelyn’s second assault team. But the grounds were eerie, quiet, and untouched. The perimeter breach had been thwarted before the mercenaries could even breach the outer glass doors.

Roman threw open the heavy oak doors of the lower-level medical suite, his chest heaving.

"Claire!" he called out, his voice echoing down the hallway.

The door to the suite opened immediately. Claire stood in the doorway, pale and shaken, her left arm still bound in its compression wrap. Behind her, Lily was sitting quietly on the sofa, clutching the battered copy of The Little Bear Who Forgot His Way in her lap.

Roman crossed the room in three strides, grabbing Claire by her uninjured shoulders, his eyes scanning her frantically from head to toe. "Are you hurt? Did they touch you?"

"We're fine, Roman. Your security team intercepted them at the perimeter fence before they even reached the house," Claire reassured him, placing a gentle hand over his rigid forearm. "The guards took care of them. But... look at this."

She stepped aside, gesturing toward the coffee table.

Lying flat on the wood surface was a second, older envelope made of heavy parchment, identical to the one Eleanor Hale had written before her death. Beside it lay a single sheet of paper covered in the exact same shaky, elegant handwriting.

Roman walked over slowly, as if approaching a bomb that might detonate at any second. His hands trembled as he picked up the paper.

My dearest Roman, If Evelyn’s greed has finally forced her hand, and you are reading this second letter, it means the worst has come to pass. I could not tell you everything in my first confession because I feared it would break your heart beyond repair. Evelyn was not alone in her plotting. She had a partner inside our own family—someone who helped her forge the corporate asset transfers six months ago. Someone who wanted my shares of Hale Technologies just as badly as she did. Look at the signature on the trust deed from November third, my boy. It wasn't just Evelyn's hand that signed away my corporate proxy. It was...

Roman’s eyes scanned down to the signature line at the bottom of the page.

The breath instantly left his lungs. The room began to spin.

The name written at the bottom of the confession wasn't a stranger. It wasn't a board member, a rival CEO, or an outside conspirator.

It was Julian Hale.

May you like

His own younger brother. The COO of Hale Technologies. The man Roman trusted more than anyone else on earth, the brother he had raised, protected, and placed right beside him at the top of the corporate ladder.

"Julian," Roman whispered, the name tasting like ash and poison in his mouth. "My own brother."
