Chapter 8 - The Trial

The trial was a spectacle, but we didn't have to participate in the drama. The evidence was so airtight that Carolyn’s defense was nonexistent. The recording of the attack on the trail was the centerpiece, and hearing her own voice played back in a courtroom full of people who now knew her for what she was—that was the ultimate justice.
She was sentenced to twenty years.

As the gavel fell, the courtroom didn't erupt. There was a solemn sense of relief. The air in the city felt lighter, as if a long-held breath had finally been released.
I didn't stay to watch her face. I went to the hospital to pick up Jessica for her final check-up.
