Chapter 6 - The Weight of Justice

The police finally arrived at the Sterling manor on Wednesday. This time, they didn't have a choice. The state attorney general had been involved.

I watched from my truck as they led Carolyn out in handcuffs. She looked frantic, searching the windows of the mansion as if she expected a lawyer or a bodyguard to emerge and solve her problems. But there was no one. Her husband had already fled to a summer home in another state, leaving her to face the wreckage alone.

As she passed my truck, her eyes locked onto mine. There was no defiance left. Just a hollow, desperate fear. She was a monster who had finally realized she was only ever a human—and a flawed one at that.

I looked at Thomas. "Is it enough?"

Thomas nodded. "The law will take it from here. And she will never hold power over our family again."
