Chapter 10 - Home at Last

Years passed, turning the sharp edges of past trauma into distant memories.

It was Mateo’s tenth birthday. The spacious backyard of the Coyoacán home was filled with children laughing, colorful balloons, and a large cake shaped like a spacesuit—Mateo’s current obsession. He wanted to be an aerospace engineer.

Mariana stood near the glass greenhouse, watching her son blow out his candles surrounded by his school friends, his teachers, and Dr. Elena Ortiz, who had become a close family friend. Mateo was the top student in his class, known for his incredible kindness, gentleness, and protective nature toward younger children.

A hand gently rested on Mariana’s shoulder. It was Alejandro Sterling, who had supported her through every step of her legal and personal journey, and who had slowly, patiently earned a place of deep respect and affection in both Mariana and Mateo’s lives.

"You did it, Mariana," Alejandro said softly, looking at the happy scene. "Look at him. He’s whole."

"We did it," Mariana corrected him, smiling as she looked up at the clear blue sky.

The nightmare that had started five years ago was officially over. The chains were gone, replaced by the unbreakable bonds of a mother’s love. She had returned from the shadows not just to seek a reckoning, but to build a sanctuary where love would always win.

Mateo broke away from his friends, holding a large slice of chocolate cake, running straight toward Mariana with a wide, bright smile.

"Mamá, this is the first slice! It belongs to you," he said proudly.

Mariana knelt down, taking the plate, and wrapped her arms tightly around her son. As she held him close, hearing his steady, happy heartbeat against her chest, she knew that they were finally, truly, home.
