Chapter 5 - The First Whisper

While the shadows of justice began to envelop Ricardo’s life, a quiet light was beginning to dawn in a small, heavily secured cottage on the outskirts of Valle de Bravo. Mariana had moved Mateo there, far away from the city, surrounded by whispering pine trees and the gentle sounds of nature.

Two weeks had passed. Mateo was physically cleaner; his skin had lost its greyish tint thanks to a careful, nutrient-dense diet, and the raw wounds on his neck were fading into pale pink scars. But mentally, he remained a fortress. He spent most of his days wedged in the small gap between the wardrobe and the wall in his bedroom, pulling a heavy blanket over his head.

Mariana didn't force him out. She didn't push him to be the boy she had left behind. Instead, she brought her work laptop and sat on the floor three feet away from his hiding spot, day after day. She spoke to him in a soft, steady cadence, reading him old Mexican folk tales, talking about her parents, and describing the stars.

"When I was away, Mateo," she whispered one evening, the room lit only by the warm glow of a small lamp. "I looked at the same moon you did. Every single night. I told the moon to keep you warm. I didn't know they were hurting you... if I had known, I would have burned the world down to get to you sooner."

From beneath the blanket, two dark, oversized eyes peeked out.

Mariana kept her hands in her lap, showing no sudden movements. She placed a small, plush stuffed dog—a soft, golden puppy—on the floor halfway between them.

"This is Max," Mariana said softly. "He’s a good dog. He only knows how to love."

An hour passed in absolute silence. Then, a tiny, pale hand crept out from under the blanket. The fingers were no longer caked in dirt, but the nails were still short and bitten down. Slowly, hesitantly, Mateo pulled the plush toy into his dark corner.

Mariana held her breath, a tear slipping down her cheek.

Suddenly, a tiny, raspy voice sounded from behind the wardrobe. It was a sound so faint it was almost swallowed by the wind outside, but to Mariana, it was louder than thunder.

"Ma... má..."

May you like

Mariana choked back a sob, pressing her hand over her mouth to keep from startling him. "Yes, mi amor. Mamá is here. Mamá is never, ever going to leave you again."

Mateo didn't come out, but he pressed the plush toy against his cheek, and for the first time in five years, he didn't growled when a human being spoke to him. The fortress was thick, but love had just cracked the first stone.
