Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Trembles

Doña Elvira sneered, holding the baby tighter. "See? The police are here. They must have found her. They’re going to arrest her for taking Mateo."

Ricardo opened the door, a manufactured expression of grief and righteous indignation plastered across his face. "Officers! Thank God you're here. My unstable ex-wife broke into my home and abducted my traumatized son—"

A tall, sharp-eyed female detective stepped forward, bypassing Ricardo entirely. Her badge read Detective Garcia, Specialized Unit for Crimes Against Children and Vulnerable Persons. Behind her stood two armed federal agents.

"Mr. Ricardo Mendez?" Detective Garcia asked coldly.

"Yes, and I want to report—"

"You are not reporting anything, Mr. Mendez," Detective Garcia interrupted, pulling out a search warrant. "We are here executing a federal warrant for the immediate search of these premises, as well as an arrest warrant for you and your mother, Elvira Mendez, on charges of aggravated child abuse, unlawful confinement, and torture."

Vanessa stood up, her face turning as white as a sheet. "This is absurd! This is a respectable household! Look at this baby—"

"And who are you?" Detective Garcia turned her piercing gaze on Vanessa. "Are you Vanessa Lopez? The individual listed as a co-conspirator in the fraudulent diversion of corporate funds?"

"I have nothing to do with this!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the kitchen. "I just live here!"

"We received a comprehensive medical and forensic report four hours ago," Detective Garcia stated, gesturing for her officers to begin searching the house. "Complete with photographic evidence of the backyard, forensic samples of the chain, biological traces inside the doghouse, and the medical evaluation of five-year-old Mateo Vargas-Mendez. The neighbors have also provided statements confirming they heard a child crying for months, but were told by your mother that it was a stray animal."

Doña Elvira stood up, shaking with rage. "That boy is a monster! He brought a curse on this family! My son deserves a real legacy, a real heir! This baby right here—this is the true bloodline!"

Detective Garcia smiled a cold, humorless smile. "We’ll see about that, ma'am. Because part of the federal order includes a mandatory DNA paternity test for that infant, requested by the primary estate holder, Mariana Vargas, who has presented medical records from six years ago indicating Mr. Mendez’s complete physiological infertility."

Ricardo felt the breath leave his lungs. He looked at Vanessa. Vanessa looked at the floor, unable to meet his eyes.

"Vanessa...?" Ricardo whispered, his voice cracking. "What is she talking about? The clinic in Houston... you said the treatment worked..."

May you like

"Oh, grow up, Ricardo," Vanessa hissed, her mask of sophistication completely slipping. "You wanted an heir to secure Mariana's family fortune, and I needed a provider. You really thought a man with your medical history could magically produce a child?"

Doña Elvira let out a horrific, strangling gasp, staring at the baby in her arms as if it had suddenly turned into a viper. The house of cards they had meticulously built on a foundation of cruelty was collapsing, and the ceiling was coming down fast.
