Chapter 7 - The Confession

The lobby of Vance Tower was an absolute zoo. Over two hundred journalists, photographers, and camera crews were packed behind velvet ropes. Flashbulbs went off continuously as I stepped up to the podium, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit.

Behind me stood the entire board of directors, looking nervous and grim.

I stood before the microphones, staring out into the sea of flashing cameras. I didn't have a prepared speech. I didn't have a teleprompter. I only had the truth.

"Good morning," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the massive marble lobby. The room instantly fell dead silent.

"Over the past forty-eight hours," I began, resting my hands on the edges of the podium, "there has been immense speculation regarding the sudden resignation of Vice Chair Eleanor Vance, as well as the pause on the two-billion-dollar Midtown Tower project."

I paused, looking directly into the primary network camera in the center of the crowd.

"The public stories written about me call me 'The King of Concrete.' They talk about my empire, my fortune, and my buildings. But they do not talk about the monstrous cost at which that empire was built."

Whispers broke out among the journalists. Camera shutters clicked frantically.

"Five years ago," I continued, my voice steady and unfiltered, "I abandoned the woman I loved, Madeline Hayes, to pursue corporate success. Shortly after, my mother, Eleanor Vance, used her power and money to conceal a secret from me. Madeline gave birth to my triplets—Leo, Maya, and Noah."

Gasps exploded across the room. Several reporters actually dropped their notebooks.

"While I was living in luxury, my mother forced Madeline into poverty, blackmailing her with legal threats and stripping her of her dignity," I said, looking straight into the lenses. "Two days ago, I found Madeline sleeping on a bench in Central Park, holding our three shivering children in her arms."

The silence that followed was suffocating. The board members behind me were practically frozen in horror.

"I am standing here today not as the CEO of Vance Enterprises," I said, my voice rising with absolute conviction. "I am standing here as a father who failed his family. Effective immediately, I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of Vance Enterprises."

Panic broke out among the board. Harrison Sterling took a step forward, his mouth open in shock.

"I am stepping down," I repeated over the uproar, "because my empire means nothing if it was built on the suffering of my children. I am appointing Julian Crosby as interim CEO. Furthermore, fifty percent of my personal equity in this company will be placed into an irrevocable trust for low-income mothers and homeless families in New York City, managed personally by Madeline Hayes."

I looked at the reporters, who were staring at me in total, stunned disbelief.

"My mother hid my family in the dark to protect a corporation," I concluded softly. "I am giving up the corporation to bring my family into the light. Thank you."

Without taking a single question, I turned and walked away from the podium, leaving behind the greatest media explosion in Manhattan's modern history.
