Chapter 3 - Sanctuary at the Plaza

"We need to go, Madeline," I said gently, looking at her cracked lips and shivering shoulders. "The babies are freezing. You are freezing."

She pulled back reflexively. "I can't go to your apartment, Arthur. I know how your life is. Security guards, cameras, news reporters—"

"We're not going to my apartment," I interrupted firmly. I stood up and took off my heavy wool overcoat, laying it gently across her and the children. "We're going somewhere safe."

I pulled out my phone and dialed my personal driver, Thomas, who had been waiting four blocks away. Within three minutes, a sleek black Lincoln Navigator pulled up along the curb of Fifth Avenue. Thomas rushed out, his eyes widening in shock as he saw the state of the woman and three infants I was carefully helping off the park bench.

"Mr. Vance?" Thomas stammered. "Is everything alright?"

"Drive us to the penthouse suite at The Plaza, Thomas," I ordered, lifting the lightweight portable stroller Madeline had scavenged from a local shelter. "Call the manager on the way. I want an entire floor cleared, private security at the elevators, and the hotel's on-call pediatrician standing by in thirty minutes."

"Right away, sir."

During the short drive, Madeline sat in the back seat, holding the three infants like a mother lion protecting her cubs. The warmth of the heater made her drowsy, but her eyes fought against sleep, darting nervously between me and the tinted windows.

"What are their names?" I asked quietly, sitting across from her.

Madeline looked down at the tiny bundles. A soft, sad smile touched her lips. "This is Leo," she said, touching the baby on her left. "He was born first. He's the loudest when he's hungry. The one in the middle is Maya... she has your dark hair. And the little one on the right is Noah. He was the smallest. The doctors didn't think he would survive the first week."

Leo, Maya, Noah.

My children. Three lives that had existed in the shadows while I chased money and prestige.

When we arrived at The Plaza, the manager was already waiting at a side entrance with a team of discreet staff. Within minutes, we were swept up in a private elevator to the top floor. The penthouse was warm, spacious, and filled with plush furniture, but Madeline looked at the luxury as if it were a trap.

"I don't belong here, Arthur," she whispered, standing in the middle of the grand living room, holding Leo against her chest. "Look at me. My coat is torn. I haven't had a warm shower in three days."

"You belong wherever you are safe, Madeline," I said, stepping closer, careful to give her space. "This entire floor is locked down. Nobody gets up here without my personal authorization. Not the press, not my board of directors, and especially not my mother."

A knock came at the door, and Dr. Sarah Jenkins, a renowned Manhattan pediatrician, walked in carrying two large medical bags.

"Mr. Vance, I came as fast as I could," Dr. Jenkins said, setting her bags down on the mahogany dining table. She looked at Madeline and softened her professional demeanor instantly. "Hello, dear. Let's get these little ones checked out and warmed up, shall we?"

For the next two hours, the suite became a hive of quiet activity. Dr. Jenkins examined Leo, Maya, and Noah. Aside from mild dehydration and cold exposure, the triplets were miraculously healthy—a testament to Madeline's fierce, desperate devotion. Hotel staff brought up baby formula, warm blankets, clothes, and an array of fresh food.

After feeding the babies and settling them into three cribs brought up by the hotel staff, Madeline finally stepped into the master bathroom to shower.

I sat on the edge of the sofa in the dimly lit nursery room, watching the soft rise and fall of my children's chests as they slept.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my pocket. The caller ID displayed: JULIAN CROSBY - COO, VANCE DEVELOPMENTS.

I answered, keeping my voice low. "Speak."

"Arthur! Where the hell are you?" Julian's anxious voice came through the receiver. "The board meeting started fifteen minutes ago! The investors for the Midtown Tower project are waiting in the main boardroom! Eleanor came in ten minutes ago looking like she saw a ghost, and she's demanding we vote on an emergency restructuring!"

I closed my eyes, feeling a cold, ruthless clarity wash over me.

"Cancel the meeting, Julian," I said calmly.

"What?! Arthur, this is a two-billion-dollar deal! If you don't sign today, the bank—"

"I said cancel it," I cut him off, my voice dropping like steel. "And tell Eleanor that if she sets foot in the Vance Enterprises building again today, I will have her arrested for corporate embezzlement and human rights violations."

"Arthur, what is going on?" Julian gasped.

"A war, Julian," I replied. "And I'm about to tear the kingdom down."
