Chapter 5 - The Vault of Truth

At First National Bank, the heavy steel door of Box 402 swung open with a deep metallic click.
The bank officer stepped back, giving me privacy.
Inside the long metal box lay three thick bound ledgers, an audio cassette tape labeled For Madeline — Read/Listen First, and a set of property deeds stamped with official county seals.
I pulled out the cassette tape and placed it into a portable player Mr. Harrison had lent me. I put on the headphones and pressed play.
My father’s voice—warm, raspy, and full of gentleness—flooded my ears, making my eyes sting with tears for the first time all day.
“Maddy... my brave, sweet girl,” Dad’s voice whispered through the static.
“If you’re listening to this, it means Eleanor has done exactly what I feared she would do. She always loved status more than truth. I knew before I fell sick that she was secretly depleting our family accounts to fund her sister’s failed investments and her own luxury habits.”
I swallowed hard, listening as his voice cracked with emotion.
“I couldn't stop her entirely without destroying our home while I was alive. So I placed everything real—the timberland estate in Maine, my grandfather’s shares in MidWest Logistics, and the primary emergency trust—into a private vault registered solely under your name. I made sure it would remain invisible until the day you turned twenty-eight or until Eleanor tried to sell off the last of my legacy.”
“Lily is young and easily led, Maddy. Eleanor will try to turn her against you. But remember this: you are the heart of this family. Don't let her steal your future. The key is yours. The estate is yours. Protect yourself, and when the time is right... help your sister see the light.”
The tape ended with a soft hiss.
I took a deep breath, took the deeds and ledgers out of the box, and packed them securely into my leather bag.
I walked out of the bank vault into the bright afternoon sun. My phone buzzed.
It was a text from Lily.
[Madeline, please... Mom told me what happened. The police are here at the venue. Julian’s parents are threatening to annul the marriage. Please come back. I need to know the truth.]

I looked at the message, then at Dad’s watch on my wrist.
It was time to end Eleanor’s reign once and for all.
