Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the Façade

Back at Willow Creek Estate, the ceremony had barely finished when the atmosphere shattered.
As the guests moved toward the outdoor pavilion for the champagne toast, three men in dark suits carrying black leather briefcases walked directly up to the head table where Eleanor, Aunt Evelyn, and Julian Vance’s parents were standing.
“Mrs. Eleanor Carter?” the lead auditor asked loudly enough for several nearby guests to hear.
Eleanor straightened her shoulders, her face pale beneath her makeup. “This is completely inappropriate! We are in the middle of my daughter’s reception!”
“Mrs. Carter, I am representing First National Trust,” the officer announced calmly. “The fifty-thousand-dollar balance transfer for the venue rental, catering, and floral services was rejected thirty minutes ago due to unauthorized trust access.”
Julian’s father, Richard Vance—a stern man who cared more about corporate reputation than anything else—frowned deeply, stepping forward.
“What is the meaning of this?” Richard demanded, staring at Eleanor. “Eleanor, you assured us the Carter estate was liquidating the dowry trust today.”
“It’s a mistake! A bank error!” Eleanor stammered, her voice rising in pitch. “Evelyn, call the manager!”
“It is not an error, ma'am,” the officer replied, pulling out a legal notice. “The primary trustee, Madeline Carter, has not authorized the release. As of this moment, the venue manager has placed a hold on all services. If the account is not settled within two hours, the reception will be closed, and law enforcement will be contacted regarding unpaid commercial debts.”
Lily, still wearing her diamond-encrusted veil, stepped forward, her eyes wide with confusion and rising panic.
“Madeline?” Lily asked, her voice trembling. “Why would Madeline have to authorize this? Where is Madeline? I haven't seen her all day!”
Eleanor gripped Lily’s arm tightly, her fingers digging into her daughter’s skin. “Don't worry about her, Lily! She’s... she was busy! She’s trying to ruin your day out of jealousy!”
“Jealousy?” a voice called out from the back of the pavilion.
The crowd parted.

Arthur Holloway stepped forward, holding a thick legal file, followed by two uniformed police officers.
“Madeline isn't jealous, Mrs. Carter,” Mr. Holloway announced to the entire gathering. “She’s at the main bank vault right now, opening the box your late husband left for her—the box that proves you embezzled over eight hundred thousand dollars from your daughters’ college funds.”
