Chapter 2 - The Silent Alarm

Inside the sunlit glass chapel of Willow Creek Estate, seventy guests sat in velvet-covered chairs while string musicians played a gentle renditions of Pachelbel’s Canon.

Eleanor sat in the front row, right side, glowing with pride. Her youngest daughter was about to marry Julian Vance, heir to Vance Development Group. This marriage was Eleanor’s crowning achievement—the ultimate ticket back into elite social circles.

Suddenly, a loud, jarring vibration buzzed inside Eleanor’s designer handbag.

She reached down, intending to mute it discreetly, but stopped when she saw the caller ID: First National Private Trust — Urgent.

She canceled the call.

Two seconds later, it rang again.

She canceled it again, feeling a prickle of irritation. Who would call from the bank’s executive division on a Saturday afternoon?

Then another call came in from a different number: Holloway & Associates Law.

And another: Willow Creek Estate Management.

Then a text message flashed across her screen in bold red preview text:

[WARNING: Account #8841 Primary Authorization Revoked. All outgoing transactions, including event venue deposit, suspended immediately due to missing primary signatory.]

Eleanor’s blood ran cold.

Up at the altar, Julian Vance and his parents were standing proudly. Lily was walking down the aisle, her veil trailing behind her, looking radiant. But in the back of the chapel, the lead wedding coordinator was frantically motioning to the head of venue security.

The venue's master ledger, linked directly to the Carter Family Trust account that Eleanor had managed since my father’s passing, had just flagged a catastrophic fraud lock.

The trust wasn't Eleanor’s. It had never been Eleanor’s.

And the only person whose physical signature could clear the lock and keep the wedding from being shut down mid-vows was currently sitting at a highway diner, holding an old silver wristwatch.
